Quick tips before driving from PHX to Flagstaff?
Land at noon, and driving to Flagstaff. Looking at maps, seems to be two ways out. Anyone have suggestions on one vs the other?
1) PHX → I-10 → I-17 North (Approx. 2 hrs 15 mins).
2) PHX → SR 51 → Loop 101 → I-17 (Approx. same duration).
Secondly, was thinking about a quick drive around Phoenix before heading out. Maybe grab a quick bite too.
Any suggested routes to do a quick driving tour to see 'stuff' that isn't overly out of the way? Or routes to avoid? Any amazing quick bites to eat?
Driving from Phoenix to Flagstaff is straightforward, and your choice of route depends a bit on traffic and personal preference. Both routes are fairly similar in duration (~2 hrs 15 mins) under normal conditions, but here are some details to help you decide:
- I-10 → I-17 North: This is the most direct and commonly used route. You’ll stay on main highways almost the entire time. The drive on I-17 from the Phoenix area to Flagstaff is scenic, passing through desert landscapes that gradually transition into pine forests as you climb in elevation. This route avoids city congestion, especially if you’re leaving around noon.
- SR 51 → Loop 101 → I-17 North: This is slightly more local, looping around Scottsdale and north Phoenix before joining I-17. It can be more congested, especially on the Loop 101, but may give you a short drive through central Scottsdale if you’re interested in seeing that area quickly. It’s not significantly faster than the I-10 option.
For a quick driving tour of Phoenix before heading out:
- Head through Downtown Phoenix to see landmarks like the Arizona State Capitol, Chase Field, and the Roosevelt Row Arts District. This is compact enough to see from your car without much detour.
- Consider driving a short loop through Scottsdale Old Town for art galleries, historic buildings, and boutique shops. This is also a convenient spot for a quick bite.
- If you like nature views without leaving the city, South Mountain Park has a scenic drive offering panoramic views of the metro area.
Quick bite recommendations near central Phoenix / Scottsdale:
- Matt’s Big Breakfast – Classic, hearty breakfast if you land in the morning.
- Oink Café – Known for sandwiches and casual fare in Phoenix.
- Pizzeria Bianco – Legendary pizza in downtown Phoenix, good if you want a short sit-down before driving.
- FnB Restaurant – Upscale, local ingredients, in Scottsdale Old Town.
Additional tips:
- Traffic on I-17 can get busy late afternoon on Fridays and around holiday weekends. Midday is usually fine.
- There are scenic pullouts along I-17 as you approach the high country near Sedona and Flagstaff—great for photos or quick stretch breaks.
- Watch your speed; Arizona has strict enforcement on highways, especially in the desert stretches.
In short, take I-10 → I-17 for the simplest and most scenic route, but the SR 51 → Loop 101 option works if you want a quick drive through Scottsdale. A brief loop through downtown Phoenix and/or Scottsdale Old Town is doable in an hour or so before heading north.
