Double tree-paradise valley vs Canopy Scottsdale Old Town

Hi there,

My daughter and I are coming to Scottsdale in April. I like the Doubletree and she likes the Canopy. I reserved our nights (as a placeholder) at the Doubletree- with a balcony view of camelback mountain and the resort pool. She wants to go "thrifting" and I want to go take a trip up Apache trail. Doubletree is less expensive than Canopy. I'm in my early 60's and she is in her early 30's.

Our main differences in the hotels are that I like the Doubletree b/c of the balcony with views of camelback mountain and the pool; They have a shuttle that can take us to old town; as many bottles of water you want; customer service ( from reviews)

She likes the more modern/ newer/ southwest furnishings of the Canopy; the fact that we would already be in old town for the "thrifting" aspect. I'm not sure whether Scottsdale is great place for thrifting as I do not do that, but she says she has found a place she wants to go to. Her complaint with the Doubletree is that many of the reviews state that the rooms needs updating. People complain about the size and the worn out look of the bathrooms i.e. tubs are stained etc.

Our budget is no more than $450 per night. Can anyone tell me if there is a hotel that would alleviate our differences? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Choosing between the DoubleTree Paradise Valley and Canopy Scottsdale Old Town depends on your priorities: scenic views and resort amenities versus modern design and proximity to Old Town. Both have their advantages, but there are ways to compromise or consider alternative options that may satisfy both of you.

DoubleTree Paradise Valley Pros:

  • Balcony views of Camelback Mountain, which is beautiful for sunrise or sunset and relaxing moments by the pool.
  • Resort-style pool and outdoor spaces, great for unwinding after a day trip.
  • Complimentary shuttle service to Old Town, which allows some flexibility for your daughter to explore thrifting without needing a car.
  • Highly rated customer service and amenities like free bottled water.

DoubleTree Paradise Valley Cons:

  • Some reviews mention rooms and bathrooms are outdated, with stained tubs and smaller room sizes.
  • It is farther from the Old Town area, meaning more travel time if you want to be immersed in shops, galleries, and restaurants.

Canopy Scottsdale Old Town Pros:

  • Modern, stylish design with updated Southwest furnishings and a vibrant atmosphere.
  • Walking distance to Old Town, making thrifting, dining, and exploring galleries very convenient.
  • Rooms are generally newer, which may be more appealing for those concerned with comfort and aesthetics.

Canopy Scottsdale Old Town Cons:

  • No resort-style pool with mountain views, so less opportunity for relaxing at the hotel.
  • Potentially higher rates, which could limit flexibility for your budget.

Possible alternatives that could satisfy both of you:

  • Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows: Offers modern design, upscale rooms, a nice pool area, and is not too far from Old Town (about 10–15 minutes by car).
  • Hotel Valley Ho: Mid-century modern design, located near Old Town, great pool, and stylish rooms, balancing aesthetics and convenience.
  • The Scott Resort & Spa: Modern resort with pools, some mountain views, and relatively close to Old Town shopping areas.

Additional tips:

  • Since you both have different priorities, consider booking the DoubleTree for its pool and mountain views, then using rideshare or the hotel shuttle for easy trips to Old Town. This allows you to enjoy the resort while your daughter can thrifit nearby.
  • If being immersed in Old Town is more important, Canopy is the better choice; you can plan a day trip up Apache Trail separately from the hotel.
  • Check for any special packages or deals within your $450/night budget that might make the Canopy or alternatives more affordable.

In summary, both hotels have pros and cons. If the main goal is relaxation, mountain views, and resort amenities, DoubleTree is ideal. If proximity to Old Town, modern rooms, and thrifting convenience matter more, Canopy is preferable. Alternatively, mid-range modern resorts near Old Town like Andaz or Hotel Valley Ho could provide a balanced solution.
