kayaking in Valdez to Columbia Glacier

The two of us would like to kayak to Columbia glacier at the beginning of June for the whole day trips. . We have been told, you do not get to the Columbia glacier anymore, but to the west face. Is that impressive?

We have two companies in mind and we are wondering which one would give us the best kayaking experience. The two companies I am considering are Pangaea Adventure or Pangaea Adventure. Thank you so much.

Kayaking to the Columbia Glacier in June is an incredible experience, but it’s true that due to glacial retreat, day trips no longer reach the main face of the Columbia Glacier. Instead, most operators take kayakers to the west face of the glacier, which is still very impressive with massive ice formations, floating icebergs, and stunning glacial scenery.

The west face offers plenty of photo opportunities and the chance to see wildlife such as seals, sea otters, and various seabirds. The area is also quieter than the main face, which can enhance the sense of adventure and connection with nature.

Kayaking Companies:

  • Pangaea Adventures is a reputable operator known for well-organized tours, experienced guides, and providing high-quality kayaking gear. Their tours focus on safety and also include educational commentary about the glacier, local wildlife, and geology.
  • Since you mentioned the same company twice, it seems Pangaea Adventures is your main option. They are generally considered one of the best for small-group, full-day glacier kayaking trips out of Valdez.
  • Tips for choosing the best experience include booking early (June is a popular time), ensuring the tour is a full-day trip for maximum exploration, and checking what is included (lunch, wetsuits, safety gear).

Additional Advice:

  • Dress in layers and be prepared for cold conditions on the water, even in June.
  • Bring a waterproof camera or case, as you will be close to ice and water spray.
  • Ask the operator about their approach to seeing wildlife and unique ice formations – some guides may adjust the route depending on conditions and wildlife sightings.
  • Even though you won’t reach the main face of Columbia Glacier, the west face is still very impressive, with towering ice cliffs and vibrant blue ice.

Overall, a Pangaea Adventures full-day kayaking tour to the west face of Columbia Glacier offers a safe, scenic, and memorable experience. You’ll get stunning glacier views, possible wildlife sightings, and a full day immersed in Alaska’s spectacular coastal wilderness.
