Attractions/Activities Advice
Hi All!
We will be visiting Seward at the very beginning of July and just looking for any suggestions of wacky, fun or unusual attractions or activities that are available and considered worthy? We will have a car so able to drive around no problem.
Also looking at a glacier landing helicopter trip… are these worth doing in July? Would there still be snow on the glaciers? They are obviously expensive so just want to make sure we would get the experience that fits the picture in our heads!
Thanks all for any suggestions!
Seward in early July is a fantastic time to visit. The weather is generally mild, with long daylight hours, and most attractions and activities are fully operational. With a car, you’ll have flexibility to explore both Seward itself and nearby natural areas along the Seward Highway.
For unusual or wacky attractions, Seward has some unique options beyond the typical sightseeing:
- Alaska SeaLife Center: While not “wacky,” it’s an excellent hands-on marine science center featuring rescued marine animals. They occasionally offer behind-the-scenes tours.
- Kenai Fjords National Park Boat Tours: While boat tours are common, you can look for specialty tours such as wildlife-focused excursions with naturalists, photography tours, or longer full-day trips that reach more remote areas.
- Resurrection Bay Kayaking or Paddleboarding: Rent a kayak or join a guided tour to explore hidden coves, sea caves, and watch for sea otters and puffins up close.
- Hiking with a Twist: Try the “Hidden Lakes” or “Caines Head” trails for less crowded, rugged hikes that include historical sites from WWII-era fortifications.
- Fishing or Halibut Charters: These can be fun and unusual experiences even if you aren’t a serious angler. Some charters also include light snacks and instruction for beginners.
Regarding glacier landing helicopter trips, early July is an excellent time to do this. You will definitely see snow and ice on the glaciers, though lower elevation glaciers may have some melt zones, giving a mix of snow, ice, and exposed rock. Helicopter glacier trips are highly recommended for several reasons:
- They allow you to walk on a glacier safely and experience the vast scale of ice fields.
- Views from above provide a perspective you cannot get from boat tours or hiking.
- Some trips include optional ice climbing or walking on crevasses, adding adventure and unique photo opportunities.
Tips to maximize your Seward experience:
- Book helicopter trips and Kenai Fjords boat tours in advance, as July is peak season.
- Bring layers, waterproof gear, and sturdy shoes even in summer, as weather can be unpredictable and glaciers are cold.
- Plan a mix of active and relaxed days. For example, one day for a boat or helicopter tour, another for a scenic drive along the Seward Highway with short hikes or picnic stops.
- Check tide and wildlife schedules for kayaking or wildlife excursions for the best chances to see sea otters, whales, puffins, and eagles.
Overall, Seward in July offers a great combination of adventure, scenery, and unusual experiences. A glacier landing helicopter trip is definitely worth the cost if it aligns with the type of experience you’re envisioning—expect to see stunning ice formations and get unique photo opportunities that create unforgettable memories.
