Itinerary for a family of 8 with two teens
We’re flying into Anchorage the beginning of June. We’ll be spending about four days in Seward. I’ve been checking out things to do. Yes, we want to do the fiord cruise but was wondering what some other things there are to do that we can do on our own. Our budget doesn’t allow us to do a tour every day. We do have a vehicle. Thanks so much for any suggestions.
Seward is a fantastic destination for families, especially with teens, as it offers a mix of stunning scenery, wildlife, and outdoor activities. Since you have a vehicle and want to balance guided experiences with self-guided options, here’s a detailed itinerary and suggestions for your four-day stay.
Day 1 – Arrival & Exploring Seward:
- Arrive in Seward from Anchorage (approx. 2.5-hour drive).
- Check into your accommodation and get oriented in town.
- Walk along the Seward waterfront and the small downtown area, enjoy local shops, and try seafood at a local restaurant.
- Optional: Visit the Alaska Sealife Center (great for teens, educational, interactive exhibits, seals and puffins).
Day 2 – Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise:
- Book a day cruise in Kenai Fjords for wildlife and glacier viewing—typical 4–6 hour tours depart from the harbor.
- Spot whales, sea otters, puffins, and massive glaciers.
- After returning, enjoy a casual dinner in town or a picnic at a scenic viewpoint.
Day 3 – Self-Guided Outdoor Adventures:
- Hiking Options:
- Exit Glacier Trail (short and moderate, allows up-close glacier views; perfect for teens).
- Harding Icefield Trail (longer hike, strenuous; do a shorter section if preferred, rewarding panoramic views).
- Beach & Kayaking:
- Visit Resurrection Bay or local beaches for kayaking or paddleboarding—equipment can be rented without guided tours.
- Scenic Drive:
- Drive along the Seward Highway, one of the most scenic highways in Alaska, stopping for photo opportunities and short hikes.
Day 4 – Optional Activities & Departure:
- Consider a short wildlife or fishing trip if budget allows (some charters allow self-guided fishing from the boat).
- Visit Lowell Point for a scenic walk, beachcombing, and picnicking.
- Explore local trails or viewpoints for one last glimpse of the surrounding mountains and ocean before driving back to Anchorage.
Additional Tips:
- Pack layers—Alaskan weather can change rapidly even in June.
- Bring comfortable hiking shoes and water-resistant jackets.
- Wildlife is abundant; maintain safe distances and respect the environment.
- Check tide tables if you plan to explore tide pools or beaches.
- Reserve cruises in advance—especially for a group of 8.
This mix of guided and self-guided activities will keep your teens engaged, allow flexibility for your budget, and let your family enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife Seward has to offer.
