Kanai Fjords cruise worth it after a Cruise

arriving to Whittier after a NB cruise from Vancouver...we are debating if we should add Seward and a Kanai Fjords cruise before we start our roadtrip towards Denali & Fairbanks (to see family) My husband wonders if a Fjords cruise is necessary or is it 'too much' after getting off a weeks cruise. Would love recommendation from someone who has experienced both. thanks!

Whether a Kenai Fjords cruise is “worth it” after a week-long cruise from Vancouver really depends on what you are hoping to experience and how much energy you have for more sightseeing.

Here are some considerations:

  • Unique Scenery: The Kenai Fjords cruise offers something different from the typical Inside Passage cruise. While both showcase Alaskan coastline, glaciers, and wildlife, Kenai Fjords focuses more on tidewater glaciers, dramatic fjords, and the chance to see puffins, sea otters, seals, and whales in a more intimate, rugged setting.
  • Duration and Energy: Most Kenai Fjords cruises are 4–6 hours, which is shorter than a week-long cruise but still requires half a day. If you are feeling tired from your previous cruise, this might be a bit of an exertion, especially if you plan to drive afterwards towards Denali and Fairbanks.
  • Accessibility: Seward is about a 2.5-hour drive from Anchorage. If your route already passes through Seward, it can be a convenient stop to experience glacier scenery without adding extra travel.

Alternatives if you skip the cruise:

  • Drive the Seward Highway and stop at scenic viewpoints along Turnagain Arm. The highway itself is incredibly scenic and offers photo opportunities and short walks.
  • Explore Exit Glacier at Kenai Fjords National Park for a shorter, land-based experience without taking the full cruise.
  • Reserve more time in Denali or Fairbanks for land adventures, wildlife viewing, and hiking, which can balance your Alaska experience after being on a ship.

Recommendation:

  • If seeing glaciers and marine wildlife up close is a top priority and you have the energy, the Kenai Fjords cruise is a fantastic experience even after a cruise. The scenery is different from the Inside Passage and the wildlife viewing can be exceptional.
  • If you are more interested in a relaxed drive and starting your road trip, it may be fine to skip the cruise and focus on the scenic highway and land-based activities, especially to avoid back-to-back cruise fatigue.

In short, it’s a “different flavor” of Alaska. If your itinerary allows and you are enthusiastic about glaciers and wildlife, it’s worth adding. If you prefer a more relaxed transition into your road trip, you can skip it without missing a quintessential Alaska experience.
