AZ Snowbowl conditions
Thinking of a VERY last minute trip to ski in Flagstaff late December. How are current conditions? Is Flagstaff a good base for a day trip to Grand Canyon, day trip to Sedona and 2 days of skiing? Thinking to do vrbo outside of town as I have heard the train is loud. Appreciate any tips/recs or notes for a last minute itinerary for 2 adults 2 tweens. Thank you!
Your idea of a last-minute trip to ski at and base in Flagstaff for side-day trips to the Grand Canyon and Sedona is a very good fit for two fit adults plus tweens—assuming conditions cooperate. Here’s how things stand and what to watch for, plus some itinerary notes for you.
Current Snow & Ski Condition at Snowbowl:
- Snow reports show that Snowbowl currently has very little in the way of new snow and very low reported snow-depth at many spots.
- Weather forecasts indicate mild conditions with limited recent snow and some precipitation expected in coming days, but uncertainty remains.
- Because you’re looking at late December, you have a good chance of some skiable terrain (Snowbowl generally opens by Thanksgiving if snow conditions allow), but being “last minute” means you may face limited runs, groomed terrain, or even partial operations.
Flagstaff as a Base with Side-Trips to GC & Sedona:
- Flagstaff is well-positioned: it’s roughly 1–1.5 hours from Sedona, and about 1.5–2 hours from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon (via US-180/US-64) depending on traffic and weather. This makes it very doable for day trips with minimal over-night changing.
- Staying outside town (via a VRBO) makes sense if you prefer quieter evenings, and you’re right that train noise (there is a freight line through Flagstaff) can affect some downtown/resort lodging. A location just outside town gives good access while keeping noise down.
- It’s realistic to plan two ski days at Snowbowl (for example, morning and/or afternoon) and use one or two additional days for day trips to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Given your timeframe (late December), you’ll want to be flexible for weather and daylight hours (sunset earlier, fewer hours of light than summer).
Suggested Last-Minute Itinerary for 2 Adults + 2 Tweens:
- Day 1 (arrival): Get into Flagstaff area, check into VRBO, relax, maybe short local stroll (think Downtown Flagstaff, Lowell Observatory, or a short snow-shoe walk if snow present).
- Day 2 (Ski): Full day at Snowbowl if sufficient terrain is open. Book lift tickets early, check what runs/terrain are open and rental availability. Evening: relax in VRBO.
- Day 3 (Sedona): Drive to Sedona in morning (~1-1.5 hrs), perhaps a short scenic walk such as Bell Rock Pathway or Chapel of the Holy Cross (kid and tween-friendly, not too strenuous). Return to Flagstaff for evening or stay in Sedona one night if you prefer less back-and-forth (consider accommodation availability).
- Day 4 (Grand Canyon): Drive to South Rim (~1.5-2 hrs), spend the day: viewpoints (Mather Point, Yavapai), maybe short rim trail walk. Consider staying near the rim or back to Flagstaff depending on your pace and daylight. Evening: back in Flagstaff or near GC if staying late.
- Day 5 (Ski/Relax/Buffer): Use this as a buffer day: if Snowbowl was excellent Day 2 and you want another ski half-day, do it this morning. Or use for any weather contingency. Afternoon free for Flagstaff local exploring or rest before travel home.
Key Tips & Things to Watch:
- Check live Snowbowl run status & lift opening early in your trip so you can adjust if conditions are limited. Use the resort’s site/webcams.
- Book your VRBO (or lodging) near Flagstaff ASAP—holiday week = higher demand.
- Ensure your vehicle is prepared for winter driving: snow tires or chains (better to have them even if not used), check forecast for road closures or icy conditions especially if travelling to the GC or higher elevations. Road conditions around Flagstaff/Grand Canyon can change quickly in winter.
- Short hikes or walks (not full alpine treks) are ideal given tweens and potential variability of snow; pick well-maintained trails for Sedona & GC.
- Optimize daylight: Late December has shorter days so plan morning starts and early dinners; avoid late drives after dark on snow-laden roads.
Bottom Line:
Yes—Flagstaff is a solid choice for what you want: two ski days + day trips to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. The key is to monitor Snowbowl’s condition in the coming days; if terrain is limited, you may choose to allocate one ski/one extended sightseeing day instead. Staying just outside Flagstaff gives you flexibility, quiet lodging, and central access. With good planning, this could be a memorable mix of alpine terrain, red-rock canyon views, and national-park scale vistas—all within a manageable week.
