Rental car Flagstaff to Vegas:last minute

I made a big boo-boo and didn’t secure a rental car. We are planning on driving from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon and then to Las Vegas. We wanted to drop off the car in Vegas. This is for September 3 through September 5. Now I’m looking for a rental car and there are zero cars anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas of where I can get a car? Everything else is booked already

Securing a last-minute rental car between Flagstaff and Las Vegas in early September can be challenging, especially with the holiday weekend demand, but there are still some strategies you can try to find a vehicle.

First, consider broadening your search beyond Flagstaff city center. Many rental agencies have cars available at nearby airports or alternative pick-up locations:

  • Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) – sometimes has inventory not listed online for downtown agencies.
  • Nearby larger airports like Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) – if you’re able to drive or shuttle there, availability and one-way rentals to Las Vegas might be easier to secure.
  • Rental car chains with multiple locations – Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Alamo sometimes have last-minute cancellations at smaller offices.

Second, try using aggregator sites and apps that scan multiple rental companies for last-minute availability. Some options include:

  • Kayak, Expedia, and Rentalcars.com – these sites sometimes show cars that aren’t visible on the individual rental company websites.
  • Priceline and Hotwire – they may offer “express deals” where you book without knowing the exact car until confirmation, often useful for last-minute trips.
  • SpotRentals or Turo – peer-to-peer car rental platforms can sometimes be the only option for immediate availability, especially for one-way rentals.

Third, consider flexibility with pick-up and drop-off times. Sometimes picking up the car a few hours earlier or later can open up options that are otherwise fully booked. Similarly, being open to slightly different drop-off locations in Las Vegas (like McCarran Airport vs. The Strip) may increase availability.

Finally, if all rental options fail, you could explore alternative transportation:

  • Shuttle or bus services from Flagstaff to Grand Canyon and then to Las Vegas – for example, Groome Transportation or FlixBus, though luggage handling will be a consideration.
  • Private car services or rideshare for longer legs – this can be expensive but could be a fallback for a short segment.
  • Joining a guided tour for that route – some tours pick up in Flagstaff and travel to both the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas, which can also simplify logistics if car rental is impossible.

Given your situation, the most promising path is to check nearby airports for rental availability, use aggregator sites for last-minute cars, and consider peer-to-peer rentals like Turo. Acting quickly and being flexible with times and locations will be crucial for success.
