Do we need an SUV?

My family of 3 will be driving from PHX to Painted Desert, Page, Sedona, Grand Canyon, and Flagstaff, then back to PHX. I'm posting this question in the Flagstaff forum because it is the most central location to all of our destinations.

Should we get an SUV (compact or midsize) for our route?

For a family road trip in Arizona covering Phoenix, the Painted Desert, Page, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, and Flagstaff, an SUV is not strictly necessary, but there are several factors to consider before deciding.

Road conditions and terrain:

  • The primary routes you’ll be driving—Interstate 17, US 89, and other main highways—are all paved and well-maintained. A standard sedan or compact car is perfectly fine for these roads in normal weather.
  • If you plan to explore unpaved backroads, desert trails, or off-the-beaten-path attractions, a compact or midsize SUV with higher clearance can be more comfortable and give extra confidence, especially if there is any unexpected snow or rain in northern Arizona.

Comfort and space:

  • An SUV offers more trunk space for luggage and equipment, which can be helpful for a family of three with bags, snacks, and any gear for outdoor stops.
  • SUVs also tend to provide a higher driving position, which some travelers find more comfortable for long drives.

Weather considerations:

  • In winter months (December through February), northern Arizona can see snow, particularly near Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. An SUV with all-wheel drive can give added safety and confidence in snowy or icy conditions, though snow chains or careful driving in a sedan can also suffice.
  • In spring and summer, weather is generally dry and warm, and an SUV is less critical.

Fuel efficiency:

  • Sedans or compact cars are more fuel-efficient, which can save money on long drives, but modern midsize SUVs often have reasonable mileage as well.

Summary recommendation:

  • If your route is strictly paved highways and you don’t anticipate bad weather or off-road exploration, a regular sedan or compact car is sufficient.
  • If you prefer extra space, comfort, and a higher ride, or want to be prepared for possible snow near the Grand Canyon or Flagstaff, a midsize SUV is a good choice.

Overall, an SUV is optional rather than required for this trip, but it can provide flexibility and peace of mind for comfort, luggage, and occasional challenging road conditions.
