Transport from Shenzhen to Hong Kong
Hi, I along with my family (UK passports) will be in Shenzhen on the 144 hour visit free and need to exit to Hong Kong.
We are staying in the Luo Hu district of Shenzhen. I know I need a booked bus/train reservation to leave Shenzhen in advance of me being allowed to fly into China.
Can you advise of the best transport method to do this please. Ultimately I will be staying at Tseun Wan in Hong Kong.
I will exit Shenzhen at 11am on a Monday and am looking for the route with least queues at immigration and a low price. I am happy to go my metro or bus.
I believe I can exit via Any of the 36 entry/exit ports in Guangdong Province (land, sea, and air) but an not sure which is best for me.
Traveling from Shenzhen to Hong Kong from Luo Hu to Tsuen Wan can be done efficiently by land, and there are several options depending on your priority—speed, low cost, or avoiding long immigration queues.
Key Considerations:
- UK passport holders can enter Hong Kong visa-free, so no visa issues for your crossing.
- Luo Hu is the most convenient district to exit Shenzhen to Hong Kong, as it is adjacent to the Luohu Control Point, which directly connects to Hong Kong's Lo Wu MTR station.
- Exiting Shenzhen does not require a pre-booked bus/train for Hong Kong entry; you just need to pass through Shenzhen immigration and then Hong Kong immigration.
Recommended Transport Options:
- Option 1: MTR via Luohu / Lo Wu: Walk from your hotel in Luo Hu to the Luohu Control Point (5–10 minutes). Pass through Shenzhen immigration, cross the bridge, then go through Hong Kong immigration at Lo Wu. From Lo Wu station, take the East Rail Line of the MTR to Kowloon and transfer to the Tsuen Wan Line to reach Tsuen Wan. This is generally the fastest, cheapest, and most straightforward option. Typical total travel time is around 1–1.5 hours.
- Option 2: Bus to Hong Kong: There are cross-border buses from Shenzhen (Luohu, Futian, Shekou) to various Hong Kong destinations including Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, and Tsuen Wan. Buses are comfortable and require passing through both Shenzhen and Hong Kong immigration at the designated border crossings. This option may be slightly slower due to road traffic and longer queues at the border, especially around 11am on weekdays.
- Option 3: Taxi / Didi to Hong Kong: Cross-border taxis are available, but they are more expensive and restricted to certain pick-up/drop-off points. Typically used by groups with luggage or elderly passengers.
Tips to Minimize Queues:
- Luohu / Lo Wu is one of the busiest crossings; consider Futian / Lok Ma Chau as alternatives if the queue at Luohu is very long. Futian has a pedestrian MTR crossing (Lok Ma Chau station) that tends to be less crowded than Lo Wu.
- Arrive slightly earlier than 11am if possible; around 10:30–10:45 can help avoid peak queues.
- Use Octopus card or purchase MTR tickets in advance for Hong Kong transport to save time after immigration.
Overall, for convenience, speed, and lowest cost, walking from Luo Hu to Lo Wu and taking the MTR to Tsuen Wan is recommended. The other land or bus crossings are valid alternatives if you want a less crowded experience or prefer a direct bus ride.
