Problem with Amap (Chinese number request)
Hi, I'm about to leave for China and I downloaded the Amap app. I tried to log in to see how it works, but it asks me for a Chinese phone number to do a search... and I don't have one! I read online that it's a common problem in the last few days... do you know how to solve it? Thanks in advance.
Amap (高德地图) is a very popular navigation app in China, but recently it has implemented stricter login and verification rules, which now often require a Chinese mobile number. This can be frustrating for travelers who only have foreign numbers.
Here are some detailed ways to work around this issue:
- Use without login: Some functions of Amap still work without logging in. You can open the app and try searching for locations, public transport, or directions without creating an account. Features like routing and maps are often available even in guest mode.
- Use alternative apps: Foreign travelers often use apps that support international numbers or don’t require login:
- Baidu Maps – can be used in English, sometimes works with foreign numbers.
- DiDi – for ride-hailing, supports international numbers via registration on their international app.
- Google Maps – works for basic navigation and directions in China if offline maps are downloaded, although public transport info may be limited.
- Get a local Chinese SIM card or eSIM: Purchasing a temporary Chinese SIM card at the airport or from a mobile operator allows you to register Amap properly. Many airports in China offer short-term SIM cards suitable for tourists.
- Ask a local friend or hotel to assist: Sometimes you can register using a friend’s number or a hotel reception’s assistance to receive the verification SMS, then use your account on your own device.
- Use an international number workaround: Some forums suggest that if you have a WeChat or Alipay account linked to your passport, you may be able to verify Amap through these accounts instead of a Chinese phone number, but this method is inconsistent and may not always work.
In summary, while Amap’s latest policy makes it difficult to fully use the app without a Chinese number, you can still access most mapping and routing functions without logging in, use alternative apps, or obtain a local SIM for full functionality. Planning ahead with offline maps or ride-hailing apps can reduce stress during your trip.
