Do I need a visa to travel from Hong Kong to Guangzhou?
I am staying in Hong Kong in late February and have booked flights out from Guangzhou but didn't check visa requirements. If I leave HK within 24 hours of my booked flight leaving Guangzhou can I utilise the TWOV 24 hour free visa? I keep looking up websites that have conflicting information and I am beyond confused at this point. Does anyone have any experience? I am a British passport holder.
For a British passport holder, the 24-hour Transit Without Visa (TWOV) policy in China typically applies only when transiting through certain international airports and continuing on to a third country. Traveling from Hong Kong to Guangzhou is considered an entry from a separate administrative region, not an international airport transit, so the standard 24-hour TWOV does not apply in this case.
Here’s a more detailed explanation:
- Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) and has its own immigration system. Exiting Hong Kong into mainland China counts as entering China, and most travelers, including British citizens, need a valid visa for entry unless they qualify for special regional policies.
- The 24-hour or 144-hour TWOV policies are generally available for international flight transits at specific airports (e.g., Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou Baiyun Airport) and require onward international tickets. These are not designed for travelers coming overland or from Hong Kong.
- For British passport holders entering mainland China from Hong Kong, you will normally need a Chinese visa. This can be a standard tourist (L) visa obtained in advance or, in some cases, a local visa on arrival at certain ports for specific regions, but Guangzhou does not generally offer visa on arrival for tourists from Hong Kong.
Practical advice:
- Apply for a Chinese visa in advance at your nearest Chinese consulate or embassy before traveling from Hong Kong to Guangzhou.
- If your schedule is very short and you are only planning to transit through Guangzhou airport to an international flight, check if your airline and airport qualify you for the 24-hour TWOV—but this will usually require staying within the airport and not leaving for the city.
- Do not rely on the TWOV from Hong Kong for overland entry into mainland China; immigration will likely require a valid visa, and you may be denied boarding or entry without it.
In summary, for a British citizen traveling from Hong Kong to Guangzhou overland or by train/road/metro, you must have a valid Chinese visa. The 24-hour TWOV policy does not apply in this scenario.
