Layover question

Hello,

So I am a Canadian citizen and my flight from Bali to Vancouver has a layover in HKG with an arrival time of midnight and my departure is 3:55pm to Vancouver. My question is what area would you recommend I stay in? I plan on seeing Po Lin Monastery and exploring the area for food and some trinket shopping. Any thoughts and recommendations would be greatly appreciated . Thanks so much

For a layover in Hong Kong with an arrival at midnight and departure the next afternoon, your options depend on whether you want to maximize rest, sightseeing, or convenience. Since your plan includes visiting Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island and exploring local food and shopping, choosing accommodation on Lantau or near the airport can make your logistics smoother.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Stay near Hong Kong International Airport (Chek Lap Kok/Lantau Island): This option minimizes travel time for late-night arrival and early-morning departure. There are several airport hotels such as the Regal Airport Hotel or Novotel Citygate, which are comfortable and convenient. From here, you can easily take a bus or taxi to Po Lin Monastery for a half-day visit.
  • Stay in Tung Chung: Tung Chung is the closest town to the airport and a gateway to Ngong Ping Village where Po Lin Monastery is located. Staying here allows you to take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to the monastery and explore the surrounding area, including local food stalls and souvenir shops. It’s a quieter area compared to central Hong Kong and ideal for a short layover.
  • Stay in Tsim Sha Tsui or Central (Hong Kong Island/Kowloon): If you want to experience the urban vibe, shopping, and street food, consider staying in Tsim Sha Tsui or Central. You would need to allocate 1-1.5 hours each way to reach Lantau Island for the monastery, which is feasible if you start early in the morning. This option allows you to enjoy Hong Kong’s nightlife and dining scene briefly after your midnight arrival.

Practical tips:

  • Since you arrive at midnight, confirm your hotel check-in availability; some smaller hotels may have limited front desk hours.
  • Take the Airport Express to Tung Chung if staying nearby or to Hong Kong station if staying in the city center—it’s fast and convenient.
  • Allocate 3-4 hours for Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha, plus some time for shopping and lunch in Ngong Ping Village or Tung Chung.
  • Keep in mind travel time back to the airport; plan to leave your hotel at least 3 hours before your international flight for security and check-in.

In summary, for convenience and minimizing travel stress, Tung Chung or an airport hotel is recommended for this short layover. If you prefer a taste of Hong Kong city life and don’t mind the early start to reach Lantau Island, Tsim Sha Tsui or Central are also options.
