Can I travel with Anti-depressants from UK to Hong Kong?
Hi,
I am going to Hong Kong with my family for a week, and I wanted to know if I can travel with Sertraline (anti-depressants) from UK to Hong Kong? I checked on Google and it said it’s not a controlled drug but my main concern is will I be checked/pulled out by security from UK to Hong Kong? And am I allowed to bring them with me to Hong Kong? I want to avoid my family from knowing I’m carrying medication so I really don’t want to be pulled over/checked by security. What are the chances that I will be checked/pulled out by security in UK and Hong Kong airport? Please let me know!
Hello,
Traveling with Sertraline (an anti-depressant) from the UK to Hong Kong is generally straightforward, as it is not classified as a controlled drug in either the UK or Hong Kong. Here’s what you need to know to minimize any potential issues at security and customs:
1. UK Departure:
- Sertraline is not a controlled substance, so you are allowed to carry it in reasonable amounts for personal use.
- It’s recommended to carry the medication in its original packaging with your name on it, but this is not strictly mandatory if you prefer discretion.
- Security staff at UK airports may not specifically pull you aside for carrying Sertraline, as it’s considered a normal prescription medicine. Random checks can happen, but the likelihood of being pulled out solely for this is very low.
2. Arrival in Hong Kong:
- Hong Kong allows prescription medications for personal use, including Sertraline.
- It’s advisable to carry enough medication for the duration of your stay plus a few extra days in case of delays.
- For prescription medicines, having a copy of your prescription or a doctor’s note can be helpful, but it is not strictly required for Sertraline.
- Security and customs in Hong Kong typically focus on controlled drugs, illegal substances, or large quantities. Personal-use antidepressants usually do not trigger checks.
3. Practical tips:
- Keep your medication in your hand luggage to avoid loss and for easier access if asked.
- Avoid splitting tablets from their original packaging unless necessary, as intact packaging reduces any chance of questions.
- There is no guarantee of absolute privacy from security, but the chance of being pulled out solely for Sertraline is minimal.
In conclusion, you can safely travel with Sertraline from the UK to Hong Kong. Carry it in your hand luggage in original packaging if possible, and consider having a prescription note if it makes you feel more secure. The risk of being stopped or questioned by airport security for this medication is very low.
