Lake Powell boat question, getting to Reflection Canyon?
Hi, I was just wondering if it's possible to rent a boat for a day and make it to Reflection Canyon and back, possibly from Bullfrog Marina which I believe is the closest? I know Dangling Rope is permanently closed, so are there any boats that can be rented by inexperienced boaters that would have enough range to get there and back comfortably? Or can you carry a couple jerry cans?
Also, once arriving at reflection canyon, is there anywhere to anchor and scramble up? I'd like to visit reflection canyon, and I'd like to spend a day on Lake Powell, so it seems like a good way to kill two birds with one stone, and avoid a two day backpacking hike to reflection canyon :) We would rent some inflatable stand up paddle boards and paddle around the canyon a bit too.
Curious what the destination experts think of this plan, thanks!
PS. Not necessarily for this year if it doesn't work out, but possibly next year late september/early october
Visiting Reflection Canyon via boat from Lake Powell is an ambitious plan, and while technically possible, there are several important considerations regarding distance, safety, and access.
Distance and logistics:
- Reflection Canyon is quite remote from Bullfrog Marina—roughly 25-30 miles one way depending on lake levels. This means a round trip of 50-60 miles in a single day.
- For inexperienced boaters, this distance is challenging, especially considering potential wind, waves, and navigational hazards.
- Fuel is a critical consideration. Most rental boats at Bullfrog Marina have limited range, so you would likely need extra fuel, which could be carried in approved jerry cans. Make sure to check with the marina about their policies on carrying extra fuel.
Boat rental considerations:
- Bullfrog Marina offers motorboat rentals suitable for beginners, including pontoons and small powerboats.
- Ensure you choose a boat rated for at least 60+ miles of travel and check the fuel capacity carefully.
- Consider starting early in the day to allow ample daylight for the round trip and time to explore.
Access at Reflection Canyon:
- There is no formal dock or anchorage at Reflection Canyon. You can anchor in a suitable shallow area, but the shoreline is often steep and rocky.
- Scrambling up to the rim is possible but requires careful footing and is not recommended for anyone uncomfortable with steep, exposed terrain.
- Paddling around the canyon with stand-up paddleboards is feasible once anchored, but be mindful of wind and water conditions.
Alternative options:
- Consider a multi-day boat trip where you stay overnight near Reflection Canyon, giving more time to explore safely without rushing.
- Hire a guided boat tour or local captain familiar with the area. They can provide the boat, fuel, and expertise for safely accessing Reflection Canyon.
- If you’re flexible with timing, visit other areas of Lake Powell closer to Bullfrog Marina for a day trip with less risk and still excellent scenery and paddleboarding opportunities.
In summary, while a one-day trip from Bullfrog Marina to Reflection Canyon is technically possible, it is only advisable for experienced boaters with a reliable, high-range boat and extra fuel. For most visitors, a guided trip or multi-day plan is much safer and more enjoyable.
