March 2025- first time in Maui and Hawaii

Just booked 9 days in Kihei and are thrilled (and now incessantly researching)! We’ve booked a two bedroom condo in Pacific Shores. The Unit has great reviews on AirBNB but I see some critical comments of the entire property here. Thoughts?

We’re a family of 4, two teen girls (15 and 17). We like clean and safe feeling but don’t care if it’s not fancy. We want to walk to lots of places and hang out and explore the island on a shoestring with respect for the culture and locales.

We’ll likely use the condo kitchen for most meals. We don’t want a packed itinerary but tell me if there’s things not to be missed! Will be renting a car. I assume it’s fairly mandatory. Thank you!

Congratulations on booking your trip to Maui! It sounds like a fantastic family vacation, and Kihei is a great base for exploring the island. I can understand your concerns after reading mixed reviews of Pacific Shores, but overall, it tends to be a fairly solid option, especially for families. Here's some insight into the condo, as well as some recommendations for your Maui adventure:

Pacific Shores Condo: Pacific Shores is generally known for its central location, which makes it easy to walk to shops, restaurants, and the beach, all important for a more laid-back stay. The property itself is often described as being in good condition, but like any rental property, there may be occasional maintenance issues or noise from nearby roads. The units on Airbnb can vary in terms of decor and upkeep, so the critical reviews you’re reading might be more related to specific units, not the entire complex. It’s a good idea to reach out to your host and ask any specific questions or express any concerns you might have before arriving to ensure you have a smooth experience. Many guests appreciate the convenience and reasonable pricing for the area.

Car Rental: Renting a car is indeed essential if you plan on exploring Maui. While Kihei has a lot of amenities within walking distance (restaurants, shops, beaches), Maui’s best spots are spread out, and public transportation isn’t as reliable for tourists. A car will give you the flexibility to explore at your own pace.

Things to Do in Maui (Must-Sees): Since you mentioned you want to take it easy and not have a packed itinerary, here are some key experiences that won’t disappoint:

  • Road to Hana: This scenic drive is one of Maui’s most famous attractions. You can go as far as you feel comfortable (even a partial trip is stunning), and you’ll get to enjoy waterfalls, beaches, and lush rainforests. Just make sure to leave early and bring snacks, as it can take several hours.
  • Snorkeling at Molokini Crater: If you enjoy snorkeling, a trip to Molokini Crater is highly recommended. You can book a boat tour from Kihei or Wailea. It’s a marine sanctuary, so expect clear water and abundant sea life.
  • Wailea Beach and Makena Beach: Both of these beaches are within a short drive from Kihei and are perfect for relaxing, swimming, and enjoying the sunset.
  • Haleakalā National Park: If you’re up for an early morning, watching the sunrise at Haleakalā is unforgettable. You’ll need to get reservations for sunrise, so be sure to book ahead of time. If you’re not into the sunrise, a hike into the crater is still amazing.
  • Explore Lahaina: A historic town with great shops, restaurants, and local art galleries. It’s a nice day trip and you can enjoy the harbor, whale watching (in season), and the banyan tree square.
  • Iao Valley State Park: This is a short and easy hike with lush landscapes and historical significance. It’s a lovely way to experience the beauty of Maui’s inland terrain.

Food & Culture Tips: Since you’ll be using the condo kitchen for most meals, you can find great local produce at the farmers' markets, and even some fresh fish at local markets. There are also plenty of local food trucks and casual eateries to try. Be sure to try local dishes like poke, loco moco, and shave ice. For a cultural experience, look into a traditional Hawaiian luau (they’re often held at resorts like the Grand Wailea or the Old Lahaina Luau).

Enjoy your time in Maui! With its mix of stunning landscapes and relaxed atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to explore and unwind with your family. Take it slow, soak in the beauty, and immerse yourself in the Aloha spirit.
