Hi! Looking for the best spot in Florida (gulf side) for vacation with two kids (8 and 12) in early July. Considering AMI, Siesta keys, Naples, sanibel- but open to other suggestions. We’d like to stay in a house within walking distance to beach and short drive to a cute town with restaurants and shopping. We’d also like a couple of other nearby activities (within an hour or less drive) like botanical gardens, aquarium, tours, hiking, etc. Thanks for any input!
For a Gulf Coast vacation with kids in early July, Florida offers several excellent options. The key criteria for your family—walkable beach houses, nearby towns with restaurants and shopping, and activities suitable for children—help narrow down the best spots.
1) Anna Maria Island (AMI)
AMI is a charming barrier island with a relaxed, family-friendly vibe. The beaches are wide, soft, and calm, perfect for kids. Many rental homes are within walking distance to the beach. The island has quaint shops, cafes, and a few small restaurants that are very kid-friendly.
2) Siesta Key
Siesta Key is famous for its powdery white sand and calm waters. Many vacation rentals are a short walk to the beach. The Siesta Village area offers restaurants, boutiques, and casual shops, all easily walkable.
3) Naples
Naples offers a more upscale Gulf Coast experience. Many homes are a short walk or bike ride from the beach, and the town center is walkable with shops, dining, and ice cream spots.
4) Sanibel Island
Sanibel is ideal for a quiet family getaway, particularly if your kids enjoy shelling and nature walks. Many beach houses are a short drive to the main beach areas.
Additional tips:
Overall, for a balance of beach, town walkability, and kid-friendly activities within an hour’s drive, Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key are excellent choices. Naples and Sanibel offer more nature and upscale options, with Sanibel leaning toward quiet, natural exploration.
