Late January - Lower Nob Hill
Coming to SF next week with the wife. We're in our early 60's and enjoy "hoofing" it when we travel. By the map, it looks like we're in a great location to do some serious "hoofing", lol. But, I'm getting a lil overwhelmed with the online searches of "can't miss" things to do. Aside from hoofing it within our area, we need some pointers on "HOW" to see the city. CityPass doesn't seem to be a viable option in SF, as we aren't the artsy fartsy gallery type, lol. I know we want to walk the Golden Gate Bridge, and the wife is dying to ride a cable car. Beyond that, we'll be winging it.
I guess I'm asking for the most cost effective way to A) ride cable car, and B) see the rest of the city. I'm planning on an Uber to the bridge.
Great — you’re absolutely right, being based in Lower Nob Hill puts you in an ideal spot to really experience San Francisco on foot. Here are some cost-effective and very walk-friendly ways to “see the city” plus some practical tips for your must-dos (bridge, cable car) and a few bonus low-cost attractions.
How to Ride the Cable Car (and Get Around Cheap)
- 1-Day Visitor Passport (Muni + Cable Car): SFMTA offers a 1-day Visitor Passport for $15, which gives you *unlimited rides on Muni buses, metro, historic streetcars, and cable cars.*
- Regular 1-Day Muni Pass (without cable car): If you’re okay limiting cable car use, there’s a $5 Day Pass (MuniMobile) for all Muni buses/trams.
- Single Cable Car Ride: One-way fare for a cable car ride is $9 when you buy in advance.
- How to Pay: Use the MuniMobile app to buy tickets or a 1-Day Passport — it’s very convenient.
Where to Walk & Explore — Great for Footing It
You’ll be in a sweet spot — here are some highly walkable, low-cost (or free) routes and sights you can hit, especially given that you’re happy to hoof it:
- Barbary Coast Trail: This is a marked 3.8-mile walking trail through downtown SF with embedded bronze medallions showing historic sites. You can pick it up near Nob Hill / Union Square, and walk toward Chinatown, Telegraph Hill, and end near Fisherman’s Wharf.
- Chinatown → Nob Hill → North Beach Walk: There’s a self-guided walking app / tour (49-Mile Scenic Drive) that covers things like Chinatown Gate, Grace Cathedral, the Cable Car Museum, Coit Tower, and more.
- Filbert Steps to Coit Tower: From the Embarcadero or North Beach, climb the Filbert Steps to Telegraph Hill up to Coit Tower — the walk is steep, but the gardens and wild parrots make it worth it.
- Lombard Street (“Crooked Street”): Walk down or up Lombard Street on the scenic, switchback section in Russian Hill — very touristy but classic.
- Alta Plaza Park: A peaceful park near Pacific Heights with great views over the city.
- Cable Car Museum: Right on Mason Street (Nob Hill) — this is free, and shows the history and mechanics of the cable car system.
Bonus Cheap / Free Things to Do
- Baker Beach: Great views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
- Coit Tower Murals: You can go into the ground floor of Coit Tower and see the historic murals for free.
- Street Performers & Sea Lions: Walk the waterfront / Embarcadero to Pier 39 — sea lions, street performers, nice views.
- 16th Avenue Tiled (Mosaic) Steps: A little further afield, but if you’re up for more walking and hill-climbing, the mosaic stairs near Grandview Park are beautiful.
- Free Walking Tours: San Francisco City Guides (volunteer-led) do ~90 min walking tours around historic neighborhoods. People on Reddit love them (“free, pay-what-you-want donation”).
Suggested Itinerary for Your Walking + Cable Car Day
- Start from Lower Nob Hill: walk to the Cable Car Museum (free) to learn a little history.
- Take a cable car ride (if you have the 1-Day Passport) up or down to somewhere scenic — maybe the Hyde / Powell line to the waterfront.
- From there, walk the Filbert Steps up to Coit Tower, take in the murals, then enjoy the view from Pioneer Park.
- Continue walking through North Beach / Chinatown, check out Chinatown Gate, Portsmouth Square, etc.
- If you’ve got time and energy, loop toward Lombard Street (the crooked street) and maybe head down toward Fisherman’s Wharf or the Embarcadero.
Tips / Things to Know:
- Wear very comfortable shoes — Nob Hill, Telegraph Hill, and Lombard are *hilly*.
- Layer up — even in January, SF can be chilly, especially near the waterfront.
- Use MuniMobile on your phone — easier than dealing with paper tickets / transfers.
- For the cable car: avoid lines at the terminal boarding points (like Powell & Market) if you can; ask locals or pick a stop a bit less crowded.
- Bring a water bottle and maybe snacks — walking around high-elevation spots (like Coit Tower) can be tiring.
Bottom Line: With your location, walking is absolutely the right play. Use a 1-day Muni Passport to get unlimited rides (including cable car), then go on foot for many of the iconic San Francisco neighborhoods and viewpoints. You’ll get a very authentic feel for the city without needing a “tourist-y” package.
