Should I avoid Chinese New Year?

Hey,

I'm planning a trip to China this Feb and I understand Chinese New Year is a holiday that's mainly celebrated with each's family, and that it's better not to travel at this time.

As I understand, this year holiday lasts until Feb. 12? Is this date right?

If I want to avoid tons of domestic tourists, traffic and maybe cheaper accommodation, will arriving on Feb 13 or after is suffice?

Thanks!

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in China, and it significantly impacts travel throughout the country. In 2025, Chinese New Year falls on February 9th, and the official public holiday typically lasts for about 7 days, so February 9th–15th is considered the peak period, although some businesses and transport schedules may extend the busy period slightly before and after these dates.

During this time, millions of Chinese people travel to visit family, which causes extremely crowded trains, buses, airports, and highways. Hotels in major cities and tourist destinations often charge higher rates, and many smaller attractions may be closed or have limited service.

If you want to avoid heavy domestic travel, crowded attractions, and inflated accommodation prices, arriving on or after February 16th is generally safer. February 13th may still be part of the tail end of the busy travel period, especially for cities with large populations or tourist hotspots.

  • Arriving before or during the official holiday (Feb 9–15) is likely to encounter extreme crowds and high prices.
  • Arriving on Feb 13 may still involve residual congestion, but it will be gradually easing.
  • Arriving after Feb 15–16 is preferable for avoiding the bulk of holiday traffic and securing better accommodation deals.

Additional tips:

  • Check train and flight bookings well in advance if you must travel during the holiday period.
  • Expect some attractions and restaurants to be closed on the actual New Year days, especially in smaller cities.
  • Use this period to experience the festive atmosphere if you enjoy cultural celebrations, but plan carefully to avoid long lines and sold-out tickets.

In summary, to avoid the rush and higher costs, it is advisable to schedule your arrival after February 15–16, rather than immediately after the official holiday ends, as the first few days afterward are still a period of lighter residual travel.
