Your June 2025 Alaska itinerary looks ambitious but very well planned for a family with mixed ages. Using a minivan gives you flexibility to see a lot without being confined to fixed schedules like the train, which is good for your group. Here’s a detailed look at your itinerary and some suggestions to optimize it:

June 9 – Arrival in Anchorage

Arriving at 8:41 PM means you’ll likely get to your hotel around 9:30–10:00 PM. Hyatt Midtown is convenient and centrally located. Since it’s late, take it easy and rest before your first full day.

June 10 – Explore Anchorage

  • Trolley tour is a nice introduction to Anchorage and works well with grandparents.
  • Short trail walks like Tony Knowles Coastal Trail or Kincaid Park loops are scenic without being strenuous.
  • ATV tour at 3 PM can be fun for your son and you, but check accessibility if grandparents are joining—they may prefer to relax or do a lighter activity.

June 11 – Glacier Discovery Train & Spencer Glacier

  • All-day train and glacier tour is excellent for seeing wildlife and scenery. Splitting activities (grandparents staying on train, you and your son kayaking or viewing bears) is a good idea.
  • Returning by 6:45 PM gives enough evening time to rest at Hyatt Midtown.

June 12 – Drive to Seward

  • Meander drive along Turnagain Arm is stunning. Potter Marsh, McHugh Creek, Beluga Point, and Windy Corner are all worthwhile stops for photos and wildlife spotting (Dall sheep, belugas).
  • Consider leaving early to maximize stops and keep drive comfortable for grandparents.
  • Harbor360 is a good base in Seward.

June 13 – Seward Activities

  • Kenai Fjords cruise or a major marine charter is a must—choose based on weather and group energy. Morning cruises typically give calmer seas.
  • Alaska SeaLife Center is excellent, especially if grandparents prefer a more relaxed indoor activity.

June 14 – Seward to Girdwood

  • Exit Glacier in the morning—boardwalk trails are easy for all ages.
  • Drive to Girdwood, about 2 hours. Hotel Alyeska is a scenic spot, consider enjoying the tram ride if time allows.

June 15 – Girdwood to Talkeetna

  • This is a long day if trying to hit multiple sights: Matanuska Glacier, Eklutna Spirit Houses, Independence Mine, Hatcher Pass, Thunderbird Falls, and Musk Ox Farm. Consider prioritizing 2–3 highlights so the day isn’t exhausting.
  • Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge is a comfortable overnight option.

June 16 – Explore Talkeetna

  • Talkeetna is charming with shops and views of Denali on clear days.
  • Jet boat tours can be thrilling; check age and mobility restrictions for grandparents.

June 17 – Hurricane Turn Train

  • This iconic train is scenic and relaxed, excellent for the whole family.
  • Leave some afternoon free to explore Talkeetna village or relax at the lodge.

June 18 – Drive to Anchorage / Departure

  • Allow 2–2.5 hours to drive to Anchorage with potential stops along the way for photos or quick hikes.
  • Arrive with enough buffer for rental return and security for 9:50 PM flight.

General Suggestions:

  • Long driving days (like June 15) may be tiring. Prioritize top sites and skip lower-priority stops.
  • Check weather daily—some activities, especially cruises or glacier tours, may be affected.
  • Booking Kenai Fjords cruise and any glacier or ATV tours in advance is highly recommended in June.
  • Always carry snacks and water for long drives and flexibility for grandparents’ comfort.

Overall, this itinerary balances scenic drives, guided activities, and relaxed exploration while keeping the pace manageable for all ages. Minor adjustments to long driving days will make it much more comfortable for grandparents.
