Surf lessons etc July 25
Hi,
We have 3 nights in Cambria and are hoping for our teenagers to take part in a surf lesson in the area.
Also, is there anywhere good for SUP or kayaking?
We are an outdoors loving family so open to suggestions of activities
Finally is there anything on in the area for 4th July?
Many thanks
Cambria and the surrounding San Luis Obispo County offer a variety of outdoor activities that are perfect for teenagers and families. Since you’re looking for surfing, SUP, kayaking, and other outdoor adventures, here’s a detailed guide.
Surf Lessons:
- Morro Bay Surf School: Located about 20-25 minutes north of Cambria, they offer lessons for beginners and teens. Their instructors are experienced and provide all necessary equipment.
- Cayucos Surf School: Slightly north along the coast, they provide small group lessons and focus on safety and fun for all ages.
- Cambria Coast Surf Programs: Some local lodges or recreation centers may also offer seasonal summer surf lessons for teens; worth checking with local visitor centers.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) & Kayaking:
- Morro Bay Harbor: Calm waters make it ideal for SUP and kayaking. Rentals are available for a few hours or a full day. Teens can easily learn and enjoy the harbor’s scenic views.
- Cayucos or Avila Beach: Another option for kayaking or SUP in protected waters, with rentals available.
Other Outdoor Activities:
- Hiking: Cambria and nearby areas have beautiful trails like Fiscalini Ranch Preserve for coastal bluff walks or Montana de Oro State Park for easy to moderate hikes.
- Biking: You can rent bikes locally and explore scenic coastal or inland trails.
- Elephant Seal Viewing: About 10 minutes north at Piedras Blancas, you can see elephant seals up close—especially fun for teens interested in wildlife.
- Glass Beach: In Fort Bragg (a bit of a drive if you’re exploring farther north), but closer options exist along the Cambria coastline for tide pooling and beachcombing.
4th of July Events:
- Cambria and nearby towns like Morro Bay often have small-town fireworks displays, local parades, and community events. Usually, the main celebrations are in Morro Bay with a fireworks show over the water in the evening.
- Check local visitor centers or town websites a few weeks before for updated schedules, as times can change and events may require advance tickets or parking passes.
Tips:
- Book surf lessons and SUP/kayak rentals in advance, especially for late July when summer crowds are high.
- Arrive early to popular beaches and harbors for parking and calmer waters.
- Pack sunscreen, hats, and water shoes—coastal conditions can be cooler and windy, even in summer.
Overall, Cambria is a fantastic base for outdoor family fun with a mix of water sports, wildlife viewing, and scenic coastal hikes. Your teenagers should have a memorable time with surfing or SUP lessons, and the local July 4th events provide a festive end to the day.
