How to move between Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou
Hi all,
I'm trying to organize a trip from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong scenic areas.
I will have 3 days.
On day 1, after departing by train from Chengdu to Huanglong-jiuzhai station, i would like to go to huanglong and after that go for the night near the jiuzhaigou's valley entrance area.
Day 2 and half day 3 visit jiuzhaigou valley before returning in Chengdu.
1. It could be a good itinerary? Some suggestions?
2. 1 day and a half is too much in Jiuzhaigou?
3. I will arrive with a couple of baggages. Where i can leave them during the visit of huanglong?
4.For the transfer from the station to huanglong and from huanglong to Jiuzhaigou it's better to book before or i can arrange the transfers on site?
Thanks a lot for the answers.
Your planned itinerary for Chengdu → Huanglong → Jiuzhaigou over 3 days is generally feasible, but there are some considerations to make it smoother and more comfortable.
1. Itinerary feasibility and suggestions:
- Day 1: Arriving at Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou station by train, heading to Huanglong first, and then transferring to accommodation near Jiuzhaigou valley entrance is possible. However, the Huanglong scenic area is at high altitude and involves some walking, so allocate at least 3–4 hours to explore.
- Consider starting very early from the station or even arranging a private transfer, as public buses may not run frequently. Also, the road to Huanglong is mountainous, so travel time can be longer than expected.
- After Huanglong, the drive to Jiuzhaigou valley entrance takes approximately 2–2.5 hours. Plan to arrive at your hotel in time for dinner and rest.
- Day 2 and half day 3: Spending a full day in Jiuzhaigou valley plus half a day is reasonable. You can cover the major lakes, waterfalls, and scenic spots comfortably, though very thorough exploration could take slightly longer.
2. Is 1.5 days in Jiuzhaigou too much?
For first-time visitors, 1.5 days is adequate to see the main highlights. If you prefer a relaxed pace with time for photography and walking, 2 full days would be ideal, but 1.5 days allows you to experience most of the key sites without feeling rushed.
3. Luggage storage during Huanglong visit:
- Most hotels near Jiuzhaigou valley entrance accept luggage drop-off before check-in. You can contact your hotel in advance to leave your baggage before heading to Huanglong.
- Alternatively, some local travel agencies and tour operators near the station offer luggage storage for a small fee. Avoid leaving valuables unattended.
4. Transfers from station to Huanglong and Huanglong to Jiuzhaigou:
- Private car or shuttle booking in advance is recommended, especially in peak travel seasons (spring, summer, and October). This ensures reliable timing and reduces waiting times.
- While it is possible to arrange transfers on-site, availability can be limited, and language barriers may make it challenging. Pre-booking offers peace of mind and better coordination with your itinerary.
Additional tips:
- Bring warm clothing for Huanglong, as temperatures can be low at high altitudes even in April.
- Stay hydrated and pace yourself, as altitude sickness is possible.
- Check the train arrival times to Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou station carefully, as missing the last transfer could disrupt your Day 1 plan.
In summary, your itinerary is reasonable, but pre-booking transfers and confirming luggage arrangements will make the trip smoother. 1.5 days in Jiuzhaigou is sufficient for main highlights, and Huanglong can be comfortably visited in a half-day excursion.
