Holland America 10 day Signature Denali cruise tour D6C
I’m a first time cruiser aboard Holland America. We’re taking a cruise tour (cruise first, land after cruise). The itinerary is confusing. On the coach from Whittier to Denali it says ‘Arrival’ 8 am and ‘Departure’ 5:30 pm. I’m trying to figure out if that’s actually the time spent on the bus? Has anybody done this before? If not, could you recommend another Itinerary that does not have a long bus ride?
On the Holland America 10-day Signature Denali cruise tour (D6C), the coach segment from Whittier to Denali can indeed be confusing if you’re reading the “Arrival” and “Departure” times. Here’s a detailed breakdown based on experiences from past cruisers and itinerary guides.
Coach travel from Whittier to Denali:
- The “Departure” time listed (typically early morning, e.g., 8 am) refers to when the coach leaves Whittier or your starting point.
- The “Arrival” time (often mid- or late afternoon, e.g., 5:30 pm) is the expected arrival at your Denali lodge or hotel. So yes — this includes the full bus ride.
- The trip is long because Whittier to Denali is roughly 360 miles, and the coach route follows highways through scenic but winding terrain. It generally takes 8–9 hours including stops for meals, restroom breaks, and photo opportunities.
What to expect on the bus ride:
- Scenic views of mountains, lakes, and forests along the Glenn and Parks Highways. Some itineraries include stops at viewpoints.
- Meals: Some operators provide a boxed lunch or stop at a small café. Snacks and water are recommended.
- Comfort: Coaches are usually modern and well-equipped (reclining seats, restrooms, heating). Still, 8+ hours on a bus can be tiring.
Alternatives to reduce travel time:
- Fly from Whittier/Anchorage to Fairbanks: Some travelers book a short flight (around 1.5 hours) to Fairbanks and then take the Denali rail or a shorter coach to Denali. This avoids the long 8-hour bus ride.
- Land-first itineraries: If you can switch to a “land first, cruise after” option, you may have shorter rail or coach legs and arrive at Denali fresher. Holland America offers D1C/D2C variations where the Denali segment comes before the cruise portion.
- Private charters or shuttle services: For those who want flexibility and shorter stops, private shuttle flights or small-group tours from Anchorage to Denali exist, though they are more expensive.
Summary:
The times listed in the itinerary reflect the actual duration of the coach journey from Whittier to Denali, including scheduled stops. If avoiding a long bus ride is important, consider flying partway or choosing a land-first itinerary. Otherwise, prepare for a full day of travel, but with scenic views and some opportunities to stretch and take photos along the way.
