Driving to kissimmee

We’re going to Orlando in April, we fly into Orlando Melbourne airport and are staying in Kissimmee, there seems to be two possible routes we could take to get to Kissimmee one which takes us north and onto the beeline expressway and I 4 and the other which goes straight down the US 192, my question is whether the 192 option is advisable or is it better to stick with the toll roads?

When flying into Orlando Melbourne (MLB) and heading to Kissimmee, most visitors notice the same two main options: taking the toll roads (primarily FL-528/Beeline Expressway → I-4) or taking the non-toll route along US-192 all the way across. Both routes will get you there, but the experience, traffic conditions, and travel time can be very different.

Overall, the toll road option is usually faster, smoother, and more predictable. The US-192 option is possible, but generally slower and more stop-and-go—better suited only if you want to save money or make local stops along the way.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect from each route:

  • Option 1: Toll roads (FL-528 → I-4 → Kissimmee/Lake Buena Vista)
  • Option 2: Non-toll roads (US-192 westbound all the way from Melbourne to Kissimmee)

Option 1: Taking the toll roads (recommended for most travelers)

This route takes you north from MLB, connects you to FL-528 (the Beeline Expressway), then links you to I-4 west toward Kissimmee. It is nearly entirely highway driving.

  • Fastest and most predictable travel time.
  • Fewer traffic signals, better road conditions, and more consistent speed limits.
  • Toll costs are moderate, depending on your rental car’s toll policy.
  • Less stressful if you're arriving after a long flight or during busier travel periods.
  • Well-lit, well-signed, and simple to navigate, especially for unfamiliar drivers.

Option 2: Taking US-192 the whole way west

This route looks straightforward on a map but is significantly slower in real-world driving. US-192 is not a traditional highway—it's a mix of commercial strips, stoplights, varying speed limits, and local traffic.

  • Much slower due to heavy traffic lights and local commuters.
  • Can be congested during peak times, weekends, and near communities along the corridor.
  • A money-saving option—no tolls at all.
  • Better only if you want to stop for food, groceries, or sightseeing along the way.
  • May add 25–45 minutes depending on time of day.

Which should you choose?

For most visitors, especially those heading straight to a resort or vacation rental after landing, the toll road option is strongly preferable. You’ll get to Kissimmee faster, feel less stressed, and avoid the unpredictable traffic of US-192. If your priority is saving money and you don’t mind slower travel, then US-192 is completely doable—just expect more delays and stoplights.

Best recommendation for first-time or family travelers: Use the toll roads (FL-528 → I-4) for a smoother, easier drive to Kissimmee.
