Connection in Atlanta from oil to orlando
Has anyone done a connection from uk to Atlanta then onto Orlando…I’m booked for July from Edinburgh with a layover of 1 hour 50mins in Atlanta and just hoping this is enough time
Connecting through Atlanta (ATL) from an international flight such as from Edinburgh to a domestic flight to Orlando is fairly common, but there are a few factors to consider for a 1 hour 50 minute layover.
When arriving from the UK, you will be coming on an international flight, which means you must clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at Atlanta. This includes passport control, customs, and possibly collecting and rechecking your bags if your flights are not on the same ticket or the airline requires it. After clearing customs, you’ll proceed through security again to reach your connecting domestic flight.
Here are some practical points to consider:
- Atlanta Airport is very large (Hartsfield-Jackson ATL is the world’s busiest airport), and walking between terminals or concourses can take 15-30 minutes depending on where your flights arrive and depart.
- 1 hour 50 minutes can be sufficient if your international and domestic flights are on the same ticket and your bags are checked through to Orlando, but it is considered a relatively tight connection.
- Delays on the international flight or long lines at immigration could put pressure on your connection.
- Airlines generally consider a minimum of 2 hours for international-to-domestic connections at ATL, so your layover is just below the recommended minimum.
Tips to make it smoother:
- Check with your airline to confirm that your luggage will be automatically transferred to Orlando or if you need to collect and recheck it.
- Consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry if you have it, which can expedite security and customs processing.
- Know your arrival and departure gates in advance and be prepared to move quickly; use the Plane Train for fast terminal transfers.
- Have a backup plan in case you miss the connection: know alternative flights and airline procedures for rebooking.
Overall, a 1 hour 50 minute layover is doable, but it’s on the tighter side. Ensure your flights are on the same ticket and be prepared to move efficiently through ATL. Expect to be walking and going through security quickly.
