Travel recommendations

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to bring my parents (both 69 years old) to Beijing, but we only intend to visit the Forbidden City since it's the one attraction we missed on our previous trip. After that, we plan to leave Beijing and explore other places.

Can anyone recommend destinations that are easily accessible by high-speed rail? I was considering Chengdu, but it seems a bit far. We only have seven days in China (March 17–22), so we want to make the most of our time.

Would appreciate any suggestions—thanks!

Since you plan to visit only the Forbidden City in Beijing and then continue exploring other destinations via high-speed rail, it’s best to select cities that are easily accessible within a few hours to maximize your 7-day trip, especially considering your parents’ comfort and convenience.

High-speed rail options from Beijing:

  • Tianjin: About 30–35 minutes by high-speed train. Tianjin offers a mix of historical architecture, the beautiful Italian Concession area, and Tianjin Eye on the Haihe River. Ideal for a short 1–2 day visit.
  • Qinhuangdao: Around 2–2.5 hours by high-speed train. Coastal city with the famous Shanhaiguan section of the Great Wall. Good for a day trip or overnight stay.
  • Jinan: About 3.5–4 hours by high-speed train. Known for Baotu Spring and traditional Chinese gardens. Suitable for a 1–2 day visit.
  • Shijiazhuang / Handan: Approximately 2–3 hours by high-speed train. These cities are less touristy but offer cultural sites if you prefer quieter destinations.
  • Xi’an: Roughly 4.5–6 hours by high-speed train. Home to the Terracotta Warriors and ancient city walls. Comfortable overnight stay recommended, though slightly longer travel.

Suggested itinerary for 7 days:

  • Day 1–2: Beijing – visit Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and nearby attractions.
  • Day 3: Take high-speed train to Tianjin – explore historic districts, waterfront, and local cuisine.
  • Day 4–5: Travel to Xi’an via high-speed train (optional longer trip) – visit Terracotta Warriors and old city.
  • Day 6: Return to Beijing or stop at a city like Jinan or Qinhuangdao en route.
  • Day 7: Departure from Beijing.

Tips for traveling with elderly parents:

  • Choose first-class or business-class train tickets for extra comfort.
  • Minimize transfers and overnight stays in multiple cities to reduce fatigue.
  • Pack light and plan slower-paced itineraries, focusing on fewer attractions but higher quality experience.

In summary, for a 7-day trip with elderly parents, destinations like Tianjin, Qinhuangdao, Jinan, or Xi’an are highly accessible via high-speed rail from Beijing and allow a comfortable and rewarding experience without excessive travel fatigue.
