beach conditions in clearwater beach since hurricane
We are thinking of vacactioning on clearwater beach the last week of Feb- what are the conditions on the beach? Is there debris on the beach? We were there before and could walk for miles on the beach. Can you still do that?
A post from November talked about restaurants smelling moldy- is this still the case?
Would love to hear from anyone who has been there recently.
Good question. Short answer: yes, Clearwater Beach has made a lot of progress in its recovery from the hurricanes, but there are still some remnants and caveats — things aren’t 100% back to “pre-storm perfect,” though by February things are likely to be in reasonably good shape. Here’s a detailed breakdown as of the most recent updates, and what you might realistically expect when you visit.
Here’s the current status and what locals / officials are saying:
- Beach condition & sand cleanup: According to the City of Clearwater’s storm recovery page, the white sugar sand on Clearwater Beach is open and available for visitors. Life-guards are back on duty.
- Water quality: The city resumed water quality testing, and recent results deem the water “good.”
- Debris and sand displacement: There was significant sand movement from the storm surge. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection reports that dunes were heavily eroded and a large volume of sand was deposited inland.
- Remaining clean-up visible: Local media (FOX 13) reports that while crews have been working to rake and separate debris from sand, “piles of sand” still remain in spots, and officials caution that some sand needs to be inspected for contamination before being returned to the beach.
- Public access and safety: The city has reopened parking lots, and beach access is restored. However, some infrastructure (like Pier 60) is still not fully back — the pier’s fishing portion remains closed pending structural assessment.
- Tourism and business recovery: According to tourism officials, about 80% of hotels and restaurants in the St. Pete / Clearwater area are open again. A local newsletter also reports that most beach businesses have reopened by early 2025.
- Debris in the community: Even though the beach itself is largely cleared, some debris from the storms remains in the surrounding areas. Officials acknowledge that not every corner is pristine yet.
About your specific concerns:
- Walking long stretches of beach: Yes, you should still be able to walk for a good distance on Clearwater Beach. The sand is largely restored, and the beach is open. But be prepared that in some places there may still be slightly uneven terrain due to restoration or sand redistribution.
- Debris on the beach: While much has been cleaned up, there may still be some residual debris in less obvious places. That said, the city seems confident enough in beach conditions to have re-opened, and beach cleanups have been ongoing.
- Mold / restaurant odors: I found no credible, recent reports confirming widespread moldy smells in restaurants on Clearwater Beach (at least not in the most recent local government / recovery-update sources). There were concerns earlier in recovery, but most businesses are reopening.
What visitors are saying:
- According to local reporting and tourism officials, many restaurants and beach businesses are open again.
- Some long-time locals noted that while the area is not fully “back to normal,” the essential beach experience is very much returning.
Bottom line: If you’re planning to visit at the end of February, you’re likely to find Clearwater Beach in very good shape. The sand is restored, water quality is good, and most businesses are operating again. There may be some cosmetic or infrastructure-recovery details still being wrapped up — but you’re unlikely to be significantly impacted for a beach vacation.
If you want extra reassurance, you could reach out to your hotel or the local visitor bureau a few weeks before your trip to get the latest status on beach maintenance and restaurant reopenings.
