I have a 21 hour layover in Hong Kong. Travelling from Australia to Thailand. I was hoping to step outside of the airport for that time.
However the airline told me that non residents can't leave airport.I thought that was wrong but now I am second guessing and trying to find information to guarantee I can leave airport as I have young kids.
I have a Australian passport.
I am travelling via Cathay Pacific. My checked in luggage will transfer to next flight.
I have read no visa is required. Is this correct?
As an Australian passport holder, you are allowed to enter Hong Kong for up to 90 days without a visa. This means that during your 21-hour layover, you can leave the airport and explore the city, even with young children, as long as you have your passport and onward flight details.
Important points to note:
Transport and sightseeing options:
In summary, the airline’s statement about “non-residents can’t leave” is incorrect for Australian passport holders. You do not need a visa for this short stay, and a 21-hour layover provides ample time for a safe and enjoyable trip outside the airport.
