Family trip to Monterey in mid-December

Hi everyone,

My family and I are planning a trip to Monterey in mid-December. We’d really love to check out some wineries while we’re there - I’ve heard there are so many great ones in the area. Any recommendations that are especially worth visiting?

And if there are other cool things to do or must-see spots nearby, we’d love to hear those too.

Thanks a ton for any tips! 🙏

Monterey and the surrounding Monterey County area are lovely in mid-December. While the weather can be cooler and some wineries may have limited hours, many are still open for tastings and visits. The region is especially known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Recommended wineries to visit:

  • Bernardus Winery – Located in Carmel Valley, it offers beautiful grounds, tasting rooms, and a chance to enjoy both wine and scenic views. Reservations are recommended, especially in winter.
  • Holman Ranch Winery – Known for their boutique wines and rustic, picturesque tasting room, also in Carmel Valley.
  • Hahn Estate Winery – Slightly further south in the Santa Lucia Highlands, this winery is renowned for Pinot Noir and offers stunning hillside views.
  • Cowgirl Winery – Fun, relaxed atmosphere with a variety of wines and occasional live music events.
  • Joyce Vineyards – A smaller, family-owned winery with great reds and a welcoming tasting experience.

Other cool things to do in Monterey in mid-December:

  • Monterey Bay Aquarium – Always a hit with families; winter tends to be less crowded.
  • Cannery Row – Historic area with shops, restaurants, and scenic waterfront views.
  • 17-Mile Drive – Even in winter, this scenic drive offers iconic coastline views, wildlife sightings, and famous stops like Pebble Beach and the Lone Cypress.
  • Point Lobos State Natural Reserve – Just south of Carmel, this is a beautiful place for short walks and wildlife viewing, including sea otters and seals.
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea – Quaint town with art galleries, boutique shopping, and cozy cafes.

December is off-peak, so many attractions are less crowded, but always check winery hours and consider making reservations. Also, bring layers—coastal Monterey can be chilly and windy this time of year.

With a combination of wineries, scenic drives, and iconic Monterey sights, your family should have a memorable trip even in winter.
