Less touristy gardens
It will be my second trip to Suzhou and was wondering if there are any recommendations for less touristy gardens in the city?
Suzhou is famous for its classical gardens, and many of the most famous ones like the Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Lingering Garden can get very crowded, especially during weekends and holidays. If you’re looking for less touristy gardens for a more tranquil experience, there are several options to consider.
Here are some recommendations:
- Master of the Nets Garden (Wangshi Yuan) – While it is still relatively well-known, it is often less crowded than the Humble Administrator’s Garden. Visiting early in the morning helps avoid tourists.
- Humble Administrator’s Garden back areas – The smaller paths and lesser-known sections of the main gardens are quieter if you explore beyond the main courtyards.
- Couple’s Garden Retreat (Ou Yuan) – A smaller, charming garden that tends to attract fewer crowds, giving a more intimate experience.
- Net Garden (Wangshi Yuan) side alleys – The small alleys and adjacent local gardens around the Net Garden area can provide peaceful strolls away from the main tourist paths.
- Local community gardens – Some neighborhoods have smaller, historically preserved gardens or courtyards that are not on typical tourist maps. Asking locals or walking along canals can reveal hidden gems.
Tips for a quieter visit:
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon, as most tourists arrive between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
- Avoid weekends and public holidays if possible, as even lesser-known gardens can become crowded.
- Combine garden visits with a walk along the canals, where you can enjoy peaceful scenery without the tourist crowds.
By focusing on these less-visited gardens and timings, you can enjoy the beauty of Suzhou’s traditional landscapes in a calmer and more reflective atmosphere.
