Hello! Visiting Shanghai and nearby cities like Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Wuxi in December can be a pleasant experience, though there are a few considerations regarding weather and crowd levels.

Weather in December:

  • Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Wuxi all have a temperate climate. In December, average temperatures range from 3°C to 12°C (37–54°F).
  • Expect chilly and damp conditions, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Light jackets or layered clothing are recommended.
  • Rain is possible but usually light. Snow is rare but not impossible, especially in Suzhou and Wuxi.

Crowds:

  • December is outside the main Chinese holiday periods, so crowds are generally moderate compared with national holidays like Golden Week or Chinese New Year.
  • Tourist sites in Suzhou (classical gardens) and Hangzhou (West Lake) will have visitors, but it’s manageable, especially on weekdays.
  • Disneyland in Shanghai may be busier on weekends, so visiting on a weekday is ideal if possible.

Itinerary considerations:

  • Your first few days in Shanghai (Day 2–4) may feel a bit long if you’re staying in the city center. You could combine some day trips to nearby areas or distribute your free days differently.
  • High-speed trains between Shanghai–Suzhou–Hangzhou–Wuxi are efficient (approx. 30–60 minutes between cities), so your plan for Days 5–8 is feasible.
  • Arriving at Shanghai Disney Resort by 8pm on Day 8 is sufficient to check in and rest before a full day at the park.

Private Suzhou tours:

  • Many companies offer private or small-group tours focused on Suzhou’s classical gardens, silk workshops, and canal areas.
  • Recommended highlights include Humble Administrator’s Garden, Lingering Garden, Tiger Hill, and a canal boat ride.
  • Options for private tours include English-speaking guides via Viator, Klook, or local travel agencies in Suzhou. You can book half-day or full-day tours depending on your interests and pace.
  • Some private drivers/guides can also combine Suzhou with nearby Wuxi attractions, making it convenient for your multi-city plan.

In summary, your itinerary is doable in December, with moderate crowds and cool weather. Using private tours in Suzhou can help maximize your visit efficiently and provide a more comfortable experience for your family.
