Outdoor store in San Francisco

We need some supplies for our John Muir Trail hike, when we arrive in San Francisco.

Can you advise a store where we can buy everything?

Umong the things needed will be:

Bear Canister BV500 (cannot order here in Holland, unless paying crazy deliverycosts)

Instant meals (because of restrictions, otherwise we could take them)

Water bottels

Water filter

Muscito spray

Maybe some more small things, typically needed for hiking trips.

Thank You!

San Francisco has several outdoor and sporting goods stores where you can find most, if not all, of the gear needed for a John Muir Trail hike. Given your list, it’s best to target stores that specialize in backpacking and camping gear rather than general sporting goods.

Main Options

  • REI San Francisco: Located downtown near Market Street, REI is the most comprehensive outdoor store in SF. You can find bear canisters (including the BV500), water filters, hydration systems, instant meals, insect repellents, and a full range of hiking gear. Staff are knowledgeable and can help with last-minute purchases or advice.
  • MEC / Local Outdoor Shops: MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) or other smaller outdoor shops often carry lightweight backpacking gear, water bottles, insect repellent, and trail meals. These stores are good for supplementary items if REI is out of stock on a specific item.
  • Outdoor Research / Specialty Stores: Stores like The North Face flagship or local hiking outfitters sometimes carry specialized equipment like bear canisters and lightweight camping gear. Less comprehensive than REI but can be a backup.

Tips for Your Shopping List

  • Bear Canister BV500: REI usually stocks these; call ahead to check availability if you want to ensure it’s in stock.
  • Instant Meals: Look for dehydrated meals suitable for backpacking; REI has brands like Mountain House, Backpacker’s Pantry, and Good To-Go.
  • Water Bottles & Hydration Systems: Nalgene bottles, Platypus, or Camelbak bladders are all available.
  • Water Filters: Sawyer Mini, Katadyn, or MSR filters can all be found at REI.
  • Mosquito/Insect Spray: Look for DEET-based or picaridin sprays; sunscreen and bug nets are also available.
  • Other Hiking Essentials: Lightweight backpack, trekking poles, headlamp, first-aid kit, and multi-tools.

Practical Advice

  • Arrive early: Summer weekends can be busy at REI, especially in San Francisco.
  • Check online inventory: REI allows you to reserve items in-store for pickup, which saves time.
  • Ask for advice: Staff can help ensure your list is complete and compliant with trail regulations.
  • Consider weight: Since this is a multi-day hike, aim for lightweight versions of all gear.

Overall, REI San Francisco is your one-stop shop for everything on your John Muir Trail packing list. Supplement with smaller specialty shops if you’re looking for specific brands or last-minute items.
