Layover in SFO, stay there or go in town?
We are flying international flight to SFO, will arrive at 11:00~ then take domestic flight to JAC that departs at 17:00. Wondering if we should go in town such as Pier 39 to have a short outing?…..thx
With your SFO layover of approximately six hours, it is possible to leave the airport and do a quick outing in San Francisco, but there are several factors to consider, including immigration/customs clearance, security re-check for your domestic flight, traffic, and travel time to and from downtown.
Here’s a breakdown:
- After landing from your international flight at 11:00, you will need time for customs and immigration, which can take 30–60 minutes or longer depending on the line.
- You’ll also need to collect any checked luggage and possibly recheck it for your domestic flight, which adds additional time.
- Plan to be back at SFO at least 1.5–2 hours before your 17:00 domestic departure for security and boarding.
Considering travel time:
- Downtown San Francisco, including Pier 39, is about a 25–40 minute drive from SFO each way without heavy traffic. During midday, traffic can increase travel time.
- If using public transit, BART to Embarcadero takes around 30 minutes, plus walking time to Pier 39.
Options to make the most of your layover:
- If you are comfortable moving quickly and don’t mind tight timing, you could take BART or a taxi/rideshare directly to Pier 39, walk around, grab a bite, and take photos. Limit your visit to 1.5–2 hours.
- If you prefer a more relaxed experience and less risk of missing your flight, consider staying in the airport. SFO has several lounges, restaurants, and shops where you can enjoy a meal, rest, and stretch.
- Another alternative is to explore nearby areas like the SFO Bayfront Trail or Millbrae area for a quick walk or light sightseeing without the stress of city traffic.
In summary, going into San Francisco is feasible but will be rushed. Staying at or near the airport is safer and less stressful, particularly with an international arrival and domestic departure on the same day.
