Blue Angels

Hi all. Looking forward to returning to Key West for the first time in far too long!

We will be in town the same weekend as the Blue Angels. One of my friends is an absolute fanatic about them. Not looking to spend the day at the airshow - she can do that at home - but we would very much like to enjoy some drinks with a first rate view. Was thinking maybe the Perry on Stock Island might be a good choice. For those of you who live in the area or have been there when the Angels were in town, any other suggestions/hints?

Visiting Key West during the Blue Angels weekend can be really exciting, even if you don’t plan to spend the entire day at the airshow. The key is to find a location that gives you a great view while also offering drinks and a relaxed atmosphere.

The Perry Hotel on Stock Island is indeed a popular choice. It has waterfront bars and terraces where you can watch the jets perform without the crowds of the main event. Being slightly removed from downtown Key West, it tends to be less hectic, and you can enjoy food and drinks while still seeing the action over the water.

Other good options and tips:

  • Hot Tin Roof: Located on Duval Street, this rooftop bar provides elevated views and a fun vibe. It can get busy, so arriving early is recommended.
  • Ocean Key Resort’s Sunset Pier: Offers panoramic views of the harbor and is right in the center of the action. Great for cocktails and casual bites while watching the show.
  • Smathers Beach: If you prefer a more casual, beachside experience, bring a chair and picnic while grabbing drinks from nearby beach bars. It’s farther from the main crowd but still gets a clear view.
  • Private charters: Some people rent small boats or join sunset cruises that are timed with the airshow. This gives you an unobstructed view from the water while enjoying drinks on board.

Additional hints:

  • Arrive early: Even if you’re not attending the airshow, areas with views fill up quickly.
  • Check for happy hour specials: Some bars and resorts offer special pricing on Blue Angels weekends.
  • Traffic and parking: Downtown Key West can be crowded, so choosing locations slightly off the main areas (like Stock Island or near Smathers Beach) can make your experience smoother.

Overall, for a mix of great views, drinks, and avoiding the main festival chaos, Perry Hotel is a solid choice, and the other locations above can offer equally enjoyable alternatives depending on your preferred atmosphere.
