HELP; Colorado Road Trip in February
Hi, my husband and myself arrive at Denver on February 16 until the 23rd. Renting a car would love to do a road trip, want to go to Garden of the gods, Dunes, Rocky Mountains ... alot of site seeing. Have no clue where to stay. Can anyone suggest an itinerary ? One of my top to do is go to the best hot springs !
Visiting Colorado in February offers a mix of snow-covered mountains, winter activities, and natural wonders. Since you have a week, you can create a loop starting and ending in Denver that balances sightseeing, outdoor adventures, and relaxing hot springs experiences. Keep in mind that winter driving in the mountains can be challenging, so plan accordingly.
Here’s a suggested 7-day Colorado road trip itinerary:
- Day 1: Arrive in Denver
- Pick up your rental car at Denver International Airport.
- Spend the afternoon exploring downtown Denver: Larimer Square, Union Station, and the 16th Street Mall.
- Overnight in Denver.
- Day 2: Colorado Springs - Garden of the Gods & Pikes Peak
- Drive to Colorado Springs (~1.5 hours from Denver).
- Visit Garden of the Gods for stunning red rock formations. Winter hikes are possible but check trail conditions.
- Optional drive or tour up Pikes Peak if weather allows.
- Overnight in Colorado Springs or nearby.
- Day 3: Great Sand Dunes National Park
- Drive to Great Sand Dunes National Park (~2.5 hours from Colorado Springs).
- Walk the dunes and enjoy the snowy landscape, which can be especially striking in February.
- Overnight in nearby Alamosa or continue south to stay closer to hot springs.
- Day 4: Hot Springs Relaxation
- Head to some of Colorado’s best hot springs. Options include:
- Pagosa Springs – famous large hot springs pool, scenic winter views.
- Glenwood Springs – historic hot springs pool, plus a spa experience.
- Mount Princeton Hot Springs near Buena Vista – a smaller, charming resort.
- Overnight near your chosen hot springs.
- Day 5: Rocky Mountain National Park
- Drive to Estes Park (~4-5 hours from Glenwood or Pagosa). Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park.
- In February, some roads may be closed due to snow, but you can still enjoy winter hiking, wildlife spotting, and scenic drives like Bear Lake or Trail Ridge Road if open.
- Overnight in Estes Park.
- Day 6: Winter Mountain Adventures
- Optional day trips from Estes Park or nearby mountain towns:
- Day ski trip to Winter Park or Eldora Ski Resort.
- Snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in Rocky Mountain National Park.
- Overnight in Estes Park or nearby mountain town.
- Day 7: Return to Denver
- Drive back to Denver (~1.5-2 hours from Estes Park).
- Explore any remaining attractions or enjoy a farewell dinner in the city.
- Overnight in Denver or head straight to the airport depending on flight timing.
Tips for a February trip:
- Check road conditions daily; winter storms can impact mountain passes.
- Pack layered clothing, waterproof boots, and traction devices for icy trails.
- Some attractions may have reduced winter hours, so confirm ahead.
- Reserve hot springs and mountain lodging early; February is peak winter season.
- Consider starting early in the day for mountain drives to avoid icy roads and crowds.
This itinerary balances natural wonders, winter mountain activities, and relaxation in hot springs, giving you a comprehensive Colorado winter road trip experience.
