Vail Village Hotel - Sonnenalp or Sitzmark

Sonnenalp vs Sitzmark

I am borrowing a friend's house in Breck for a week this winter and wanted to ski Vail for two days midweek. My plan is to drive to Vail early morning, ski for the day, check into at our hotel in the village, get dinner, ski the next day and then head back to Breck. There were a bunch of hotels that had 3 night minimum, so my top two options are Sonnenalp and the Sitzmark. This is for a family with 2 teens, so we want to be as close as possible to the lifts, and all the village activities, but also with a cool outdoor pool. Sonnenalp seems to get all the recommendations on the forums, but Sitzmark seems to be closer to the thick of everything. Both are stupid expensive, but it's only one night and the house at Breck isn't costing much. For people who don't usually stay in a "walk to the lifts" type place, which one of them offers more wow factor.

I also looked at Austria haus, Sebastion, and the Hythe at Lion's head - if anyone likes those better I would love to hear.

Thanks in advance.

When deciding between Sonnenalp and Sitzmark for a one- or two-night stay in Vail Village, there are a few factors to consider, especially for a family with teens looking for easy lift access, village activities, and amenities like a pool.

Sonnenalp:

  • Widely regarded as the classic luxury option in Vail Village. The hotel offers elegant, European-style rooms and an overall “wow factor” in décor and service.
  • Location is very convenient, though slightly set back from the absolute center of the village. It’s still an easy walk to lifts and restaurants, but you’re not right in the thick of the most bustling pedestrian areas.
  • Outdoor pool is smaller and more serene, not as kid- or teen-oriented, but great for relaxing after skiing.
  • Highly rated for service, food, and ambiance; a stay here feels like a full Vail luxury experience.

Sitzmark:

  • More centrally located in the heart of Vail Village, so you are closer to restaurants, shops, and nightlife. This can be a plus for teens wanting to explore the village.
  • The hotel has a more contemporary, lodge-style feel. Rooms are comfortable but not as opulent as Sonnenalp.
  • Outdoor pool is decent and right near the main area, making it easy to combine swimming with other village activities.
  • Overall vibe is more “active” and less formal, which can be great for families who want to be in the action.

Other Options:

  • Austria Haus: Cozy, slightly off the main village path, great for ski-in/ski-out access at Golden Peak, more casual and smaller scale.
  • Sebastian: Boutique luxury with stylish rooms, good location, and excellent pool. More intimate than Sonnenalp but very chic.
  • Hythe at Lion’s Head: Modern and spacious, close to lifts, excellent for families, large pool, but slightly outside the core pedestrian village.

For a short, midweek, family-focused stay, if your priority is being right in the center of Vail Village with easy access to shops, restaurants, and teen-friendly activities, Sitzmark may offer the best balance of location and fun. If your goal is more of a luxurious, “wow factor” experience with top-tier service and a classic European lodge feel, Sonnenalp is hard to beat.

Given that it’s just one night after skiing from Breck, many families prioritize convenience and fun over pure luxury, so Sitzmark is often the practical choice for a short stay.
