shade at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre

Hello!

I'm planning to attend a concert in May at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre, and it starts at 2:45 in the afternoon. I'd like to have a seat in the shade, but I can't figure out which sections are shaded and which are in the sun. I'm already spending a lot of money/points on flights, hotel, and rental car, so I'd prefer a cheap seat, if I wouldn't be in the sun. I've reached out to the venue, but haven't received a response. If you've been to the venue, can you please offer advice? Thank you.

Attending a concert at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in May at 2:45 PM means the sun will be strong in Phoenix, so securing a shaded seat is important for comfort. Based on the venue layout and general sun patterns, here is some guidance.

The amphitheatre is an outdoor venue with a covered stage area and a partially covered seating area toward the rear. The sun will generally be coming from the west in the afternoon, so sections closest to the stage (front) will be in full sun for most of the show. Seats further back and under the overhang provide shade later in the day.

  • Covered/partial shade areas: The higher rows toward the back of the main seating area are usually partially shaded, especially in late afternoon.
  • Lawn seating: The lawn section behind the seated area is mostly exposed and will be sunny. It may not be ideal for an early afternoon show unless you bring sun protection.
  • VIP/club seating: Some of the premium or reserved seats near the back may have overhangs or canopies. Check the venue map for “covered” designation.

Tips for maximizing shade and comfort:

  • Arrive early to claim a shaded spot if it’s general admission or lawn seating.
  • Check for high-numbered rows in the reserved section toward the back; these often catch shade from the upper structures.
  • Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen even if you are in a partially shaded area, as the sun can still be strong.
  • If possible, request a seat in the “covered” section or near an overhang when booking, as this provides consistent shade for an afternoon show.

In summary, to avoid the sun at a 2:45 PM show, aim for the back seating sections under the partial roof or overhangs rather than front or lawn areas. While these seats may be cheaper than premium front-row seats, they offer significant sun protection for comfort during the show.
