Where to stay?

Hello,

we are doing a road trip and will be in San Francisco for a few days in October but have no idea where to stay, we will have a hire car so will need somewhere to park and we want to do the typical tourist bits but my husband is concerned as he has heard there are places to avoid, which area’s would you recommend please?

We are 2 British couples in our fifties but reasonable fit 😂

For a few days in San Francisco with a hire car, you'll want a location that balances convenience, safety, and access to the city's top attractions. Some areas are better suited for tourists, especially for those in their fifties who want to explore comfortably and avoid sketchy areas.

Recommended neighborhoods to consider:

  • Fisherman’s Wharf / North Beach: Very tourist-friendly, easy walking to Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and boat tours to Alcatraz. Plenty of hotels offer parking. It’s lively, safe, and scenic, though a bit busy and sometimes more expensive.
  • Union Square / Downtown: Central location for shopping, dining, and public transport. Most major hotels offer parking. It’s convenient for cable cars and access to Chinatown and theaters. Keep an eye on street cleanliness; stay in main streets rather than side alleys.
  • Marina District: Residential and safe, with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and easy access to Crissy Field and the Presidio. Hotels and some boutique inns provide parking, and it’s great for walking along the waterfront.

Areas to approach with caution or avoid overnight street parking:

  • Tenderloin – known for higher crime and homelessness issues. Walking around briefly during the day can be okay, but avoid staying overnight here.
  • Some parts of SoMa (South of Market) – can be industrial and sparse at night. If staying here, choose a reputable hotel with secure parking.

Additional tips:

  • Book a hotel with secure or valet parking in advance, as SF street parking can be difficult and expensive.
  • October weather is mild but can be foggy, especially near the Golden Gate – layers are recommended.
  • If you plan to explore without driving, neighborhoods like Union Square or Fisherman’s Wharf make it easy to walk or take public transit to most attractions.

Overall, staying in Fisherman’s Wharf, Union Square, or the Marina gives you a balance of safety, convenience, and easy access to San Francisco’s classic sights while allowing you to park your hire car without stress.
