Beach bike ride

Hello!

If the weather cooperates we wojld like to rent bikes and bike along the beach when we are there in a couple of weeks. What is the most scenic stretch of coast to bike? I was thinking maybe Santa Monica to Manhattan beach? Is it possible to do a one way bike rental? I’m assuming there are bike shares but they often don’t come with helmets. Thx for any tips.

Los Angeles offers some fantastic beach bike routes, and the stretch you mentioned—from Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach—is one of the most scenic and popular rides. This route follows the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (also known as The Strand), which is a dedicated, mostly flat, paved path running along the coast. It gives you gorgeous ocean views, passes through Venice Beach, Marina del Rey, Dockweiler Beach, Playa del Rey, El Segundo, and finally Manhattan Beach.

Here’s what to know about planning this ride:

  • Distance: The full Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach route is roughly 22–25 miles one way, depending on exact start and end points. For a more relaxed ride, you could shorten it by starting or ending at Venice Beach or Marina del Rey.
  • Scenery: You’ll get classic LA beach vibes, ocean views, piers, and people-watching. Santa Monica and Venice have lively areas, while Dockweiler and Manhattan Beach offer quieter stretches with wide sandy beaches.
  • One-way bike rentals: Traditional bike rental shops generally expect you to return the bike to the same location. However, some rental companies offer shuttle services or “drop-off” rentals where they pick up the bike at your destination. It’s best to call ahead to confirm availability and fees.

Bike share programs, like Metro Bike Share, are another option. They’re convenient for short segments but often do not provide helmets, and using them for long distances along the coast can be tricky due to docking requirements.

  • Helmet safety: Helmets are recommended even though not legally required for adults in LA. Many bike rental shops include helmets in the rental price, so you’ll be safer and more comfortable.
  • Rental shops: Shops in Santa Monica or Venice typically offer hourly or daily rates and will rent bikes suitable for beach riding (cruisers or hybrid bikes).
  • Timing: Early morning or late afternoon rides are ideal to avoid the heavier crowds on weekends.

Alternative scenic routes include:

  • Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach loop (short and lively, about 5–6 miles round trip)
  • Marina del Rey to Playa Vista for a quieter, mostly flat ride with marina views
  • Manhattan Beach to Redondo Beach Pier for a shorter coastal ride with classic pier scenery

In summary, the Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach ride is excellent for a full-day scenic adventure along the coast. Make sure to check one-way rental options in advance and wear helmets for safety. Stopping at piers and cafes along the way adds to the enjoyment without overexerting yourself.
