4 days in LA with young adult son in August

Looking for ideas of things to do with my son. He is really into film and architecture/design. We would also like to do at least 1 hike and maybe bike the beaches. We are staying in West Hollywood.

Thanks!

Los Angeles offers a wide variety of activities that combine film, architecture, outdoor recreation, and coastal exploration, making it perfect for a 4-day trip with a young adult interested in film and design.

For your stay in West Hollywood, you can balance iconic LA experiences with active outings and design-focused explorations. Here’s a detailed plan and suggestions:

  • Film & Hollywood: Consider a Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Burbank for behind-the-scenes access to sets, props, and soundstages. The Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour is another option that mixes film history with a fun theme park experience.
  • Architecture & Design: Explore the Getty Center, which combines remarkable architecture with stunning gardens and art collections. The Broad in downtown LA showcases modern architecture and contemporary art. For mid-century modern architecture, check out the Eames House in Pacific Palisades (advance reservation required) or take a self-guided Palm Springs-style architecture walk in Los Angeles neighborhoods like Silver Lake and Hollywood Hills.
  • Outdoor & Active: For a hike, Runyon Canyon is convenient from West Hollywood and offers panoramic city views. Griffith Park trails leading to Griffith Observatory provide a combination of moderate hiking, excellent views, and the observatory itself, which is iconic for both design and film fans.
  • Beach & Biking: Rent bikes and ride along the Venice Boardwalk to Santa Monica Pier, enjoying the beach, street performers, and vibrant architecture of Venice. Muscle Beach, Venice Canals, and Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica are fun stops along the route.
  • Additional Highlights:
    • Walk along Hollywood Boulevard to see the Walk of Fame and TCL Chinese Theatre.
    • Visit the Los Angeles Central Library in downtown for both architecture and history.
    • Check out LACMA and the Urban Light installation outside for iconic photo opportunities.

Tips for navigating the city:

  • Use rideshares like Uber or Lyft for longer distances, especially from West Hollywood to Burbank or Santa Monica.
  • Start early for popular sites to avoid crowds, especially in August.
  • Combine activities geographically to minimize time in traffic—for example, do the Getty Center and Brentwood in one morning/afternoon, then head to Santa Monica/Venice for evening biking and sunset views.

With this mix of film-focused tours, iconic architecture, and outdoor activity, you can make the most of four days while keeping your son engaged and active.
