Drop off at sfo by rideshare
Advice needed…we will be arriving from our cruise in San Francisco on June 6. We want to uber or Lyft to sfo car rental area to rent a car for the day. Most rental places around pier close at 5 and we will not be returning our car rental until 830 pm so that’s why we want to rent at sfo. Will uber or Lyft drop us off at SFO car rental lot? Thank you. Any suggestions are appreciated
Yes, Uber and Lyft can drop you off at the SFO Rental Car Center. The Rental Car Center at SFO is designed for all rental car pickups and returns, and rideshares are permitted to drop passengers there. The center is separate from the main terminals, but it is well-signposted for both passengers and drivers.
Here are some practical tips for your trip:
- Pickup location: When requesting your Uber or Lyft, select the "Rental Car Center" as your destination. The driver will follow airport signage to the center, which is about 3 miles from the terminals.
- Access: The Rental Car Center is accessible via the AirTrain, but rideshares can drive directly to the pickup/drop-off area. Just follow the airport signs for “Rental Car Center / Rideshare”.
- Timing: Since you’ll be arriving from a cruise, allow some extra time for luggage pickup and potential traffic within the airport area, even if your ride seems short.
Other considerations:
- All major rental car companies operate out of the SFO Rental Car Center, so you will have full selection and flexibility for your one-day rental.
- Returning the car in the evening (like 8:30 pm) is fine at the Rental Car Center, as most companies have after-hours drop boxes for keys and contracts.
- If you prefer, you could also check with your rental company about prepaying and skipping the counter for a faster pickup, especially if your time is tight after a cruise.
In summary, rideshares can easily drop you at the SFO Rental Car Center, which is the recommended spot for all airport-based rentals. This is more convenient than trying to find rental locations near the cruise piers, which have limited hours.
