Long layover question
Hi all, wondering if someone could help with a couple of queries? So we’re travelling to Oz via Shanghai this March, landing in Shanghai @ 06.05 but next flight not until 20.20 that evening. Should I book a hotel room (but do I book for two nights as technically we’re crossing two days with relevant check in times and flight arriving early am). Should I just head to one of the lounges? Do they take turn up bookings? Not sure on timings so don’t want to book a set time from here and then find we’re delayed so missed the time slot? If I don’t have a hotel room booked would I still be considered for the transfer without visa? We have the same scenario on our return journey but easier to manage as will initially be flying overnight before arriving in Shanghai so should get some shut eye before hopefully heading off into the city. Anyone else had this conundrum? Advice would be gratefully received.
Hello,
For a long layover in Shanghai, such as your scenario of landing at 06:05 and flying out at 20:20, you have several options depending on comfort, visa requirements, and flexibility.
Option 1: Book a Transit Hotel
- Shanghai has transit hotels both inside the airport terminals and nearby. These can be booked for a set number of hours or overnight stays.
- Even though you technically cross two calendar days, you usually only need to book for one night. Check-in times are often flexible for transit passengers, but confirm with the hotel. The hotel will accommodate early arrivals if they are informed.
- Advantages: You get proper rest, a private shower, and luggage storage is handled.
- Disadvantages: Booking from afar might be tricky if your flight times change; some hotels require prepayment or cancellation policies.
Option 2: Use Airport Lounges
- Most lounges at Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao airports accept turn-up bookings, especially premium airline lounges or pay-per-use lounges.
- Advantages: Lounges provide food, drinks, comfortable seating, and showers. No need to leave the airport or worry about visas if staying airside.
- Disadvantages: Lounges can be crowded early in the morning, and comfort is limited compared to a hotel. Availability is first-come, first-served.
Option 3: Short Visit to the City
- If you want to leave the airport and explore Shanghai, UK citizens can take advantage of the 144-hour visa-free transit if eligible. This allows you to enter the city without a visa as long as you remain within the allowed time and have onward flights booked.
- Advantages: Stretch your legs and see parts of the city during your layover.
- Disadvantages: You will need to go through immigration, which can take 30–60 minutes, and allow extra time to return through security for your next flight. Time is tight for a long city visit.
General Advice:
For your early arrival, a transit hotel is the most comfortable if you want proper rest. Booking one night is typically enough, even if you arrive early morning and leave in the evening. If you prefer flexibility, lounges are a good alternative and allow you to stay airside without worrying about visas. Ensure you account for security and boarding times when planning to leave the airport.
