Hello . I have a question about getting around in Shanghai
What map app could I use ? I tried Google maps but it gives me no transport option . I can’t find how to get to my destinations with bus, tram, subway etc . I tried Apple Maps as well and it didn’t work either . I downloaded the MetroMan app which is good for navigating the subway but I want something that gives me a similar functionality I get with Google maps . Can someone help ?
Also I understand there are day cards for the subway but are there any other type of cards ? Something for three or more days ?
And I am planning on taking the bullet train to Beijing later on. Do I need to book tickets early or can I just go to the station and book for the ones leaving immediately
Thank you in advance
Getting around Shanghai can be a bit tricky for foreigners because many global map apps like Google Maps do not provide full public transport information inside China. However, there are several reliable local apps and tools that can help you navigate the city using metro, buses, and trams.
Map and transit apps:
- Citymapper: Citymapper covers Shanghai and provides metro, bus, and walking directions similar to Google Maps. It also gives estimated travel times and fares.
- Baidu Maps (Chinese): Very accurate for public transport in Shanghai. You might need basic knowledge of Chinese or use the English version. It shows bus routes, metro lines, and transfer options.
- Gaode / Amap (Chinese): Another popular Chinese map app with accurate transit options. It provides real-time bus and metro schedules. English interface is limited but usable with some patience.
- MetroMan: You already have this app; it is excellent for navigating the metro specifically but does not cover buses or other transit modes.
For general navigation with bus, tram, or subway, Citymapper or Baidu Maps are your best options. You can also use QR codes or NFC payments with Alipay or WeChat for seamless transit access.
Shanghai transit cards:
- Shanghai Public Transportation Card: A rechargeable card for metro, bus, and some taxis. You can buy it at metro stations or convenience stores. It can be used for multiple days as long as it has a balance.
- One-day metro pass: Unlimited metro rides for 24 hours.
- Three-day metro pass: Covers unlimited metro rides for 3 consecutive days, ideal for tourists.
- WeChat/Alipay QR payment: You can also pay metro fares directly using linked bank cards through WeChat or Alipay, which is convenient for short-term visitors.
Bullet train to Beijing:
- Shanghai to Beijing high-speed trains are very popular and can get fully booked, especially around weekends and holidays.
- It is strongly recommended to book tickets in advance online via official channels (12306.cn) or through travel agencies/apps like Trip.com. You can select specific train times, classes, and seats.
- It is sometimes possible to buy tickets directly at the station for trains leaving immediately, but availability is not guaranteed and might be limited to slower trains or off-peak times.
Summary: Use Citymapper or Baidu Maps for comprehensive transit navigation, purchase a Shanghai Public Transportation Card or a multi-day metro pass for convenience, and book your bullet train tickets in advance to ensure availability.
