Shanghai Hongqiao Airport
I'm advised that I would be better coming into Shangha Pudong airport rather than Hongqiao airport from Tokyo, even though Hongqiao is much nearer to Shanghai city centre. I can't really understand this. Any reason I should be put off coming into Hongqiao?
Shanghai has two major airports: Hongqiao (SHA) and Pudong (PVG). While Hongqiao is closer to the city center, there are several factors that might make Pudong a more suitable choice depending on your travel needs.
1. International Flights:
- Pudong Airport handles almost all long-haul international flights, including most flights from Tokyo.
- Hongqiao primarily serves domestic flights and a few regional international flights (mainly to nearby Asian cities). So, availability of direct flights from Tokyo to Hongqiao may be limited or less convenient.
2. Connectivity:
- Pudong has better connections for onward international travel or connecting flights.
- Hongqiao is well connected via metro (Line 2) and high-speed train, but if your next destination is another international flight, Pudong is usually more practical.
3. Airport Facilities:
- Pudong is larger, with more amenities, lounges, and services geared towards international travelers.
- Immigration, customs, and baggage handling may be smoother for first-time visitors in Pudong due to higher international traveler volume.
4. Travel Considerations:
- If your priority is minimal transit time into central Shanghai, Hongqiao is closer and quicker to reach (20–30 min by taxi or metro).
- If your flight options are limited or you want a smoother international arrival experience, Pudong is safer and more reliable.
- Transfers between Hongqiao and Pudong can take 1–1.5 hours by taxi or airport shuttle, so consider onward connections if arriving at the “wrong” airport.
In summary, the advice to fly into Pudong is likely due to better flight availability from Tokyo, smoother international services, and more predictable immigration/customs procedures. Hongqiao is convenient for domestic arrivals, but for first-time international visitors, Pudong is often recommended.
