Night time frog chorus

Hi.We're doing a bit of a nature tour of Southern florida in early May. We're staying in Old Naples for a few nights.

I've heard a spring frog chorus in Florida before and it's an amazing sound and experience!

Can anyone recommend a good spot to hear this in or around Old Naples?

Many thanks

Hearing the spring frog chorus in southern Florida can be a magical experience, especially in May when the nights are warm and the rainy season starts to pick up. Around Old Naples, there are several natural areas and preserves where you can enjoy the symphony of frogs, especially after dusk when the temperatures are right and the humidity is high.

Recommended Spots Near Old Naples:

  • Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve – This is a fantastic location for listening to frogs as well as other nighttime wildlife. Walking along the boardwalks and trails near the estuary can provide excellent soundscapes.
  • Vanderbilt Beach & Preserve Areas – Some of the mangrove areas and wetlands near Vanderbilt Beach can be surprisingly good for frog calls in the evenings.
  • Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park – While popular for daytime beachgoers, the quieter marsh areas inland offer opportunities to hear frogs and other nocturnal wildlife.
  • Conservancy of Southwest Florida Trails – A number of walking trails in protected areas have small ponds and wetlands where frog choruses are often audible after sunset.

Tips for Enjoying the Frog Chorus:

  • Plan to be out around sunset or just after; the chorus usually peaks during the early evening.
  • Bring a flashlight or headlamp if you plan to walk trails, but keep it dim to avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Consider quiet observation from a boardwalk or trail edge near water; frogs are loudest near ponds, marshes, and mangroves.
  • If you enjoy photography or recording, a tripod and a sensitive audio recorder can capture the full experience without disturbing the animals.

Early May in Naples is generally warm and humid, making it ideal for amphibian activity. Combining this experience with a nature walk or sunset view can make for a memorable evening in the area.
