Naples vs. North Naples

I’ve heard so much over the years how beautiful and fun Naples downtown (or shopping area/restaurants) is. I will be visiting next month with old college friends, many who winter in North Naples. A few of us are staying in a condo nearby,

Is it worth driving into Naples for an afternoon of shopping and lunch, or is it just as nice and fun in an area of North Naples. I don’t want to miss out on anything! Thanks.

Naples and North Naples both offer plenty of charm, but they each have their own unique feel and attractions. Whether it's worth driving from North Naples to downtown Naples for an afternoon depends on what you're looking for. Here's a breakdown of what to expect in both areas:

1. Downtown Naples (Old Naples):

Downtown Naples, or "Old Naples," is a must-see for many visitors. It has a quaint, small-town feel with beautiful tree-lined streets, high-end boutiques, and art galleries. Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South are the main shopping and dining areas, offering a variety of upscale shops, cafes, and restaurants. The area is perfect for strolling, window-shopping, and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. You’ll also find several local attractions, such as the Naples Pier, which is a great place for photos and sunset views.

  • Shopping: High-end boutiques and specialty stores offering clothing, jewelry, home decor, and art.
  • Dining: Upscale restaurants, cozy cafes, and ice cream parlors perfect for a leisurely lunch or dinner.
  • Beaches: Gorgeous, walkable beaches right off the pier, perfect for a post-lunch walk.

2. North Naples:

North Naples is a more suburban area that caters to those looking for a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. While it lacks the historic charm of downtown Naples, it has its own perks, especially for those who are wintering in the area. It’s home to several luxurious communities, golf courses, and more contemporary shopping and dining options. North Naples has great beach access, including Vanderbilt Beach, and is known for its family-friendly vibe. The Mercato shopping center is a popular spot with a mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment, including a movie theater and a few nightlife options.

  • Shopping: The Mercato has upscale shops, a Whole Foods Market, and other conveniences for those staying in the area.
  • Dining: A wide range of casual to fine dining options, such as the trendy Bravo! Italian Kitchen and The Capital Grille.
  • Beaches: Vanderbilt Beach and Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park offer more laid-back, quieter beaches.

Should You Drive to Naples?

If you're staying in North Naples, you may find that you don’t need to venture into downtown Naples for the full experience, as North Naples offers everything from shopping to beautiful beaches. However, if you’re craving a more vibrant atmosphere and the experience of Naples’ iconic streets and piers, I highly recommend making the short drive (about 20-30 minutes) into downtown Naples. The area offers a very different feel than North Naples, with a more historic, picturesque charm that’s great for an afternoon of shopping, dining, and sightseeing.

Final Recommendations:

  • If you want a more relaxed beach day: Stay in North Naples and visit Vanderbilt Beach or Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park.
  • If you want high-end shopping and dining with a lively atmosphere: Head to downtown Naples to experience Fifth Avenue and Third Street South.
  • For a mix of both: Spend your mornings in North Naples, then drive into downtown Naples for an afternoon of shopping, dining, and sightseeing.

Both areas are beautiful and fun in their own way, so you really can’t go wrong with either choice. If you want to maximize your experience and see the best of both worlds, I would definitely recommend making the trip into downtown Naples for a unique, vibrant afternoon.
