Towns to stay near Kennedy Space Center

We are spending two nights near Kennedy Space Center. I am trying to decide between Cocoa Village, and Merritt Island. I would love opinions on this! We stay at airbnb's, not hotels.

Thank you!

Jane

Choosing between Cocoa Village and Merritt Island for a stay near the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for. Both have their advantages, especially for Airbnb stays.

Cocoa Village:

Cocoa Village is a charming historic downtown area with brick streets, local boutiques, coffee shops, and restaurants. It has a small-town feel with a pedestrian-friendly layout, making it nice if you enjoy exploring on foot or grabbing a bite after a day at KSC.

  • About 20–25 minutes from Kennedy Space Center, depending on traffic.
  • More “downtown” amenities – cafes, bakeries, small local shops, and some nightlife options.
  • Airbnb options include cozy historic homes and apartments in a walkable area.
  • Good if you want a slightly more urban, yet quaint, experience outside of the theme-park vibe.

Merritt Island:

Merritt Island is closer to the Kennedy Space Center and NASA Visitor Complex, offering a more convenient location if your primary goal is easy access to the space center. It has a quieter, more suburban feel with natural surroundings and proximity to the Indian River Lagoon.

  • Roughly 10–15 minutes from Kennedy Space Center.
  • Airbnb options often include homes with more space, privacy, and sometimes waterfront views.
  • Closer access to natural attractions like Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge for birdwatching, kayaking, or short hikes.
  • Less commercial and “touristy” than Cocoa Village, ideal for a relaxing two-night stay focused on the space center.

Summary Recommendation:

If your main priority is being very close to the Kennedy Space Center and enjoying a peaceful, nature-oriented stay, Merritt Island is the better choice. If you’d like a more lively small-town feel with restaurants, shops, and strollable streets after your visits, Cocoa Village is excellent. Either way, both towns offer great Airbnb options depending on the type of accommodation you prefer.
