Which boat tour?
We will be in the area in April and are interested in a boat tour. We know the weather may still be cool. Would you recommend the Half Day Horseshoe Bend Raft tour or a Lake Powell boat tour. Primarily interested in scenery and taking a break from hiking! Thanks in advance!
Both the Half Day Horseshoe Bend Raft Tour and a Lake Powell boat tour offer scenic ways to experience the Page area without strenuous hiking, but they provide very different experiences.
The Half Day Horseshoe Bend Raft Tour:
- This is a guided rafting trip on the Colorado River below the Glen Canyon Dam. You’ll see Horseshoe Bend from the water, along with unique canyon walls, desert landscapes, and wildlife.
- The tour is relatively active—you will be on a raft, but no prior rafting experience is necessary. You sit most of the time and enjoy the scenery.
- Because it is on the river, you experience the majesty of the canyon from a low, intimate perspective, which is ideal for photography.
- Weather in April can still be cool, especially in the mornings, so dress in layers and bring a waterproof layer just in case.
Lake Powell Boat Tour:
- This is generally a motorized boat tour on the reservoir, offering a more relaxed experience compared to rafting. You can cover more area and see dramatic cliffs, canyons, and water features.
- It’s excellent for photography, as you can get close to rock formations like Rainbow Bridge or other side canyons, depending on the tour you choose.
- The experience is mostly seated and sheltered compared to a raft, so it might be more comfortable if you are sensitive to cooler temperatures or wind.
- Some tours allow for light hiking or exploring small side coves, but you can opt to simply enjoy the ride and scenery.
Recommendation:
- If your main goal is a scenic, gentle water experience and a break from hiking, Lake Powell boat tours provide a more comfortable and expansive view of the area.
- If you want a more adventurous, intimate, and unique perspective of the Colorado River and Horseshoe Bend, the Half Day Raft tour is a memorable choice.
- Consider your tolerance for cooler spring temperatures and how much time you want to spend on the water. Both tours are roughly half a day.
In summary, for relaxation and comfort with great scenery, a Lake Powell boat tour is ideal. For a more active and unique river experience with canyon intimacy, choose the Horseshoe Bend Raft tour.
