Camping trip - Monument Valley. Worry of sand storm

Thinking of joining a 3 day NP tour that includes a one night camping in Monument Valley, possibly at the end of June.

The tour reviews are great. The photos look awesome. The camp site is at the cliff, directly looking at the mittens. I think it is at the View Campground.

I don't see any complain about wind or sand storm, which is not uncommon from what I read.

Now I'm second guessing my plan, if I should choose the hotel option instead.

For those of you, who have camped at Monument Valley in June, what's your experience?

Thank you

Camping at Monument Valley, especially at the View Campground with a direct view of the Mittens, can be an incredible experience, but there are a few factors to consider, particularly in June.

Weather Considerations:

Late June in Monument Valley is typically warm to hot during the day, with temperatures often ranging from the mid-80s to low 90s (°F), and cooler nights around 50–60°F. It is also generally dry, but wind can be a factor, and sand or dust storms are possible, though not guaranteed every day.

  • Sand and wind: While major sandstorms are uncommon, gusty winds are more frequent in open desert areas, which could make camping less comfortable and could blow sand into tents or gear.
  • Temperature swings: Bring layers; mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool, so a warm sleeping bag and clothing layers are recommended.

Camping vs. Hotel Option:

  • Camping: Staying at View Campground gives an unmatched sunrise/sunset view of the Mittens. The experience is immersive, and for photography and stargazing, it is ideal. The downside is exposure to weather elements like wind, dust, and potential sand gusts.
  • Hotel: Offers guaranteed comfort, shelter from wind and sand, and amenities like running water and air conditioning. Some hotels also have rooms with views of the Mittens, though not as immediate as the campground experience. A hotel might be preferable if anyone in your group is sensitive to wind or heat.

Personal Experience Insights:

  • Most campers report that wind in June is usually moderate and manageable, and major sandstorms are rare. Check recent weather reports if possible.
  • Even with wind, the views and experience of camping in the valley are highly memorable for most visitors.
  • Many tours provide tents with stakes and some wind protection, so your experience may be more comfortable than typical backcountry camping.

Overall, if your main goal is an immersive desert experience with direct views of the Mittens, and your group is comfortable with potentially windy conditions, camping at the View Campground is highly recommended. If comfort, especially protection from wind and sand, is a priority, choosing a hotel for the night is safer, though slightly less iconic.
