Yosemite Lodging question

We are starting to plan a trip to Yosemite. We never did get to Sequoia & Kings, so we have redirected our thoughts and now looking at SF and Yosemite trip. My priority is to see the Giant Sequoia's. We will do Muir Woods for the SF leg of the trip, but when we are in Yosemite (4 nights), which place to stay gets us closer to Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias? We do want to stay in the park, but being from the East Coast, and never to Yosemite, I am overwhelmed with all the info I am finding.

We are 60+ so we're thinking guided tours inside the park for the highlights, but the trees are a must. Any info offered is greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Dee

Hi Dee, Yosemite is a fantastic choice for seeing Giant Sequoias, especially if Mariposa Grove is a priority. Since you’re planning 4 nights in the park and prefer staying inside, you’ll want accommodations that minimize your driving time to the grove while still allowing access to other park highlights. Mariposa Grove is located near the South Entrance of Yosemite, about 30–40 minutes south of Yosemite Valley by car.

Here are some lodging options that balance convenience to Mariposa Grove and access to Yosemite’s main sights:

  • Wawona Hotel: This historic hotel is right near the Mariposa Grove entrance. Staying here gives you easy access to the Giant Sequoias and offers a charming, old-world hotel experience. It’s also convenient for guided tours that start from the South Entrance.
  • Yosemite Valley Lodges (The Ahwahnee, Yosemite Valley Lodge, or Curry Village): These are in Yosemite Valley, about 35–40 minutes from Mariposa Grove. Staying here puts you in the heart of the valley with iconic views of El Capitan, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls. You’ll have to drive to the grove, but guided tours can sometimes handle transportation.
  • Chalets and Cabins inside the Park: There are several options through Yosemite Hospitality near Wawona or Yosemite Valley, offering a cozy, cabin-style experience and easier access to the grove if located closer to Wawona.

For guided tours, since you prefer a less strenuous experience and want to focus on the trees and key park highlights, consider these approaches:

  • Look for tours that start from Wawona or Yosemite Valley and include transportation to Mariposa Grove so you don’t have to worry about parking or shuttle logistics.
  • Half-day or full-day guided walks in Mariposa Grove will allow you to see the Grizzly Giant and California Tunnel Tree without overexertion.
  • Valley tours often include stops at Tunnel View, Bridalveil Fall, and Yosemite Falls, which are accessible with minimal walking.

In summary, if Mariposa Grove is your top priority, staying at Wawona Hotel is the most convenient option. However, if you want to be in Yosemite Valley for the classic views and scenery, the valley lodges are excellent but require a drive or shuttle to reach the grove. Booking guided tours can help reduce walking and maximize your time seeing both the Giant Sequoias and other Yosemite highlights.

Early booking is essential, especially for April, as lodging inside the park fills quickly. Also, keep in mind weather can still be variable in April, so check road conditions to Mariposa Grove ahead of time.
